Davenport 1

Davenport of Davenport /Damport of Damport, Davenport of Henbury, Davenport of Welthrough
Da28 =30 =31. Ormus (Orm) it is likely that he or his son was indeed born c 1104,
?Da27 =29 =30 ?Gilbert probably was the father of
Various web sites report that Ormus was born about 1104. However, BLG1886 (Davenport of Davenport) and other web sites report that Ormus was living in the time of William the Conqueror (who d. 1087). Noting that Gilbert de Venables, shown below as father-in-law of Ormus's grandson Thomas, was grandson of another Gilbert de Venables who is known to have come to England at the time of the Conquest, or that either (or both) he or his son Gilbert married late in life, or that a generation has been missed out here. Since Gilbert de Venables eldest brother was born in 1046 and presuming his other half siblings were born before him he could have born in 1050, which would make him 16 at the time of the Conquest making it possible to have taken part in it.
Some sources identify Ormus as 'of Davenport' but others suggest that it was his son Richard who obtained Davenport from the Venables family, presumably consequent to his marriage. The Davenport family's original seat was in Astbury, near Congleton in Cheshire, and family origins can be traced back to one Ormus de Davenport at the time of the Norman Conquest. He was given the Manor of Davenport from the Venables of Kinderton, the original Norman feudal Lords.
Da26 =28 =29 Richard de Davenport of Davenport b c 1130 In 1166 Ormus' son Richard became the chief forester of Leek and Macclesfield. Later the family acquired the hereditary status of Magistrate Sergeants of the Forest of Macclesfield.
m. (c1165) Amabil de Venables (dau of Gilbert de Venables of Kinderton)
Da25 =26 =27 Thomas de Davenport b c 1166
Da24 =26 =27 Richard de Davenport omitted by some sites b c 1185
Da23 =25 =26 Vivian de Davenport of Chester omitted by some sites b about 1215 Some web sites show this Vivian as son of the Richard who married Amabil de Venables, ie. missing out the above 2 generations. If the dates are to be believed, always a moot issue, we suspect that there was at least 1 generation in-between.
m Beatrix de Hulme dau of Bertrand de Hulme
Da22 =24 =25 Roger de Davenport b about 1260 d c 1297
m Mary Salemon dau of Robert Salemon or Salmon
Da21 =23 =24 Sir Thomas de Davenport of Davenport b about 1290 d c 1320 Several web sites show Sir Thomas as having married twice but there is inconsistency with the attribution of the children to those wives.
m1 1287 Agnes de Macclesfield dau of Thomas de Macclesfield
Da20 =22 =23 Sir John de Davenport of Davenport b c 1310
m. Margery de Brereton (dau of Ralph de Brereton by Ann de Huntingdon. This does not correspond with the Brereton pedigree, but the linked file here does have Margery as the daughter of William Brereton and Roesia de Vernon which we assume to be correct, as this Rose Vernon also became the stepmother of John and would have brought the children of her first marriage into the same household.)
