Massie 4

: Massey Massy of Broxton, Massie of Coddington, Massie Massy or Massey of Eggerley Edgerley, Massey of Larton
1 Commoners starts its article on this family with the following: "The early descent of the Massies, of Coddington, has long been a matter of dispute, some of the pedigrees deriving them from a younger son of Sir John Massies, of Tatton, supposed to have been slain at Shrewsbury, whose eldest son d. 8th Henry V; and others from Hamon, son of Sir John Massey, of Puddington, who also fell at the battle of Shrewsbury" and goes on to report that Ormerod thought that Tatton was the more likely source. The battle of Shrewsbury was on 21.07.1403. Visitation Cheshire, 1613, Massey of Edgerley identifies Hugh as "6 sonne to Sr John Massey of Tatton temp H.6" but provisionally, at least we follow the pedigree in Baine's 'History of Lancaster' which shows him as a younger son of William Masey of Rixton, a cadet of Tatton.
2 Both BLG1952 & Commoners start with the following Hugh who "settled at Coddington in consequence of his marriage with Agnes Bold."
Hugh Massie in Coddington a 1438
m Agnes Bold dau/heir of Nicholas Bold of Coddington
1. William Massie of Coddington, Bechin, Eggerley, etc. a 1439
Visitation Cheshire, 1580 does clarify the inter-branch connections any better by identifying William and his father as "of Potington". As BLG1952 seems clear on this generation, we ignore Visitation on this.
