Stewart 6: Stewart of Albany, Stewart of Avandale Avondale, Stewart of Burray, Stewart of Fife, Stewart of Methven
Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany, Regent b 1339, d 03.09.1420
m1 Margaret Graham, Countess of Menteith d c1380
1. Murdach Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany, Earl of Fife and Menteith, Regent b c1362, d 25.05.1425
Murdach and 2 of his sons and others, including the Earl of Lennox were beheaded following the restoration of King James I who felt that his imprisonment in England had been deliberately delayed by the Duke and in any event was keen to reduce the power of this family which had grown signficantly during the regency of the 1st Duke.
m Isabel, Countess of Lennox d c1458, dau of Sir Duncan, 8th Earl of Lennox
A. Robert Stewart, Master of Fife dvpsp 1421
There is disagreement between our sources as to whether or not the House of Avandale later Ochiltree descended from Murdach's second son, Walter, or his fourth son, James. BE1883 Albany and BE1883 Avondale acknowledge that there is "strong evidence" that Walter was the ancestor but nevertheless the former indicates that James was the ancestor. We follow TSP Albany, TSP Avandale and Ochiltree, and BP1934 Castle Stewart.

--
m Sir William Edmonstone, 2nd of Duntreath d 1486
--
1 As explained on the Edmonstone page, we show Matilda as daughter of Sir Walter rather than his brother Sir James.
2 A Matilda Stewart, described as "sister of Lord Evandale", possibly of this generation, is reported to have married Alexander Stewart of Grandtully but none of the sources which investigated the identity of Sir William Edmonstone's wife mentioned anything about her having married before/after.

D. Sir James Stewart, 'the Gross', 1st of Baldorran d 1451 in Ireland
See the note above about the conflicting reports of the ancestry of the Stewarts of Avandale, etc. We assume that those of the 7 men reported to have been sons of this James in BE1883 Stewart of Albany who have not been attributed to his brother Walter are indeed attributable to James the youngest, James of Baldorran, appears certainly to be so. Matilda, shown by TSP Albany and BE1883 as daughter of James, is reported by the Edmonstone records to be Walter's daughter see above.
