They had six known children: Anna Maverick, John, Thomas, William, Anthony, & Daniel. She married (2) WILLIAM STITSON, who took over the ferry operation. Her death is given as 16 February 1669/70, aged 93; she was more likely a decade younger. They had no recorded children. Source: Anderson's Great Migration Begins. Among the early emigrants from England to Massachusetts. Kept the ferry from Boston to Winnisimet (now Chelsea) and Charlestown,-the oldest ferry in the United States. John, Thomas, and William Harris were among the first settlers of Rowley,Essex Co., Mass., in 1644, and Daniel soon after: each had a two acrehome-lot laid out to him. The lots being of two acres each, show thatthey were all men of property and importance. These four house-lots wereall adjoining each other, which would indicate that they may have beenbrothers: and Daniel and William were certainly brothers.

m ELIAS MAVERICK. Han b 1604 Bedfordshire England d 08.09.1684 Dorchester Suffolk Massachusetts Usa. notesfor ELIAS MAVERICK: Elias Maverick (abt. 1604-1680) was the husband of Anna Harris (abt 1613-1697). They lived in Reading, MA. Among their children was Sara(h) Maverick Walton (1640-1714), wife of Samuel Walton (1639-1717). Anna Harris' parents were Elizabeth Williams (abt 1587-1669) and Thomas Harris (1590-1634) of Chelsea. Elias and Anna Harris Maverick were members of the Congregational Church at Charlestown, Suffolk County MA. Anna's father Thomas Harris operated a ferry between present day Chelsea and Charlestown. It is believed this was the first ferry established in America. After Thomas' death, his widow Elizabeth married William Stitson. Elias Maverick, Anna Harris' husband and the father of Sarah Walton, arrived in America with his parents on the ship Mary & John in 1630. Elias' parents were Mary Gye (app 1580-aft 1666) and the Rev. John Maverick (1578-1635/6), English immigrants who were among the earliest settlers of Dorchester, MA. [. . .] In 1632, Elias was living in Charlestown, Suffolk County MA and seems to have lived there for the remainder of his life. In 1634 he was granted land in what is now Revere, MA (sometimes called Pullen Point or Rumney Marsh). By 1635, Elias had married Anna Harris. Sara, 4th of eleven children, is mentioned in her father Elias' will as "Sara Walton." __________ This brief biography has been taken from Volume of a book of family history entitled ALL OF THE ABOVE I, by Richard Baldwin Cook. They were among the early settlers of Reading, MA. Among their children was the first John Walton (1684-1774), of Marblehead, MA. John's wife was Mary ________ (?-?). Among John and Mary's Walton's children was John Walton Jr (12 Feb 1709-14 Apr 1785) of Marblehead, MA, husband of Mary Swayne (Williams) (?-1781). They were the parents of Bridget Walton Taylor (May 23, 1746-Jan 22, 1831), who was the wife of Thaddeus Taylor (1744-?) of Reading, MA. Bridget and Thaddeus Taylor were married in 1767 and lived in Barnstable, NH. They became the parents of the long-lived Oliver Swayne Taylor (1784-1885), who died in Auburn, NY. Sara Walton is mentioned in the will of her father Elias Maverick, as "Sara Walton." Elias Maverick (abt 1604-1680) - father of Sara Maverick Walton – was the husband of Anna Harris (abt 1613-1697). Elias arrived in America with his parents on the ship Mary & John in 1630. The grave of Sara Maverick Walton was likely in or near Reading, MA but has not found. m JOHN JOHNSON. Han b Charlestown Suffolk Massachusetts Usa d 29.08.1708 Charlestown Suffolk Massachusetts Usa. notesfor JOHN JOHNSON: THE BLACKSMITH AT HAVERHILL, MASS. (Ancestor of Anna Pixley Johnson) In 1657, the inhabitants of Haverhill, Mass. Suffered considerably from lack of a blacksmith. To ovate this difficulty, twenty citizens of the town signed a contract to pay twenty pounds to a man by the name of Jewett to purchase his house and land. This was given to John Johnson, our ancestor, “provided he live here seven years, following the trade of blacksmith in doing the town’s work, also the said John Johnson doth promise to refuse to work for any that refuse to pay toward this purchase, until they bring under the Selectmen’s hands that they will pay. This John Johnson was a son of William Johnson, a brick maker of Charlestown, Mass. He came to Haverhill in the fall of 1657 with his wife Elizabeth who was daughter of Elias Maverick and one child, John, born August 3, 1657. He settled on land that later became the main street of the town. As blacksmith shop in those days was one of the most public places in town, it is quite probable that his settlement in that place was a prominent reason for the principal business of the town becoming located in that vicinity. Besides the house-lot and other town accommodations given him to encourage him to settle in the village, he bought parcels of land at various times until he became quite a large land-holder, but at the time of his death, he had sold and given away to his children, all but about seventy-five or a hundred acres—some of which were situated in the town of Charlestown. He became the founder of one of the largest and most respectable families of Haverhill where many of his descendants still live. He represented the town in the General Court in 1691; was one of the deacons of the church; and an officer in the militia. He was married three times; First to Elizabeth Maverick, Oct. 15, 1658, who died March 22, 1673-74; second, to widow Sarah Gillo of Lynn, March 3, 1674-75, who died July 24, 1678, at the time her twin daughters were born; and third, September 8, 1680, to Katherine, widow of John Maverick, and formerly Katherine Skipper of Boston. Haverhill suffered another Indian raid in 1708. According to Mirck, early in the year of 1708, a grand council was held at Montreal where an assault against the English colonies was agreed upon. The French were commanded by De Chaillons and Hertel de Rouville, and their Indian allies by La Perriere. Because of desertion, their forces finally dwindled to about two hundred fifty with which number they decided to attack Haverhill, at that time a compact village consisting of about thirty houses. At break of day on August 29, 1708, the attack was made, and Lieutenant John Johnson and his wife were among those killed. He was killed in the doorway of his won house, and buried in the old burying-ground with the other officers in the militia near Mr. Rolfe, their pastor. John, his son, was also a blacksmith, Indeed Chase in his History of Haverhill published in 1860 records that the trade of blacksmith had been almost or quite constantly carried on in that town by the lineal descendants of this early blacksmith. (For further information see Chase-History of Haverhill, Mass. Pp 624 ff.) The graves of Lieutenant Johnson (King Philip’s War) had a common headstone, shaped at the top to represent two, and bearing the following inscriptions: Lieutenant Catherine John Johnson wife of Lieutenant Died Aug John Johnson Ye 29, 1708 7 in died Aug ye Ye 76 year of 29, 1708 7 in His age ye 70 year of Her age. John Johnson was married three times. With his oldest son, John, also Lieutenant, he went to Charlestown, and there they were married the same day, the father to his third wife, the son to his first. The first wife of Thomas n, son of John Johnson Jr., was Ruth Bradley who in her girlhood had been a captive among the savages who, March 15, 1696-7 murdered her father and mother and her two sisters and carried Ruth away at the same time that they had carried Hannah Dustin (this was an ancestor of the Hamblin side of the Johnson family –Sytha’s mother’s side) Ruth was killed in another raid of the Indians upon Haverhill, August 29, 1708 at the same time as was John Johnson and his wife. When slain she held in her arms her only child Lydia, a year and six days old, born in the second year of her marriage. The child strangely enough, escaped the tomahawk, concealed perhaps in the folds of her mothers dress. Ruth’s grave bore a headstone containing this inscription: Ruth ye wife Of Thomas Johnson Died Aug. ye 29 1708 & in ye 21 year of her age Once w’t ye Indians In captivity After ’twas her lot In their hands to dy. After Ruth’s death, Thomas Johnson married Rachel Ordway from whom we are descended. Her child Lydia grew to womanhood, married, and had children. ch of ELIZABETH MAVERICK and JOHN JOHNSON er: 50. i. m MARY NETHERLAND dau of JOHN NETHERLAND and SARAH HANKINS b 1719 Goochland Virginia Usa d 20.05.1799 Scottsville Albemarle Co Virginia Usa. notesfor WILLIAM LEE HARRIS: A history of Albemarle County states:[1] William Harris was long one of the early and leading citizens of Albemarle. His first patent was located on Beaverdam of Hardware in 1739. He also made entries on Totier and Green Creeks, until during the next forty years he possessed more than two thousand acres. He was evidently a man of fine judgement and great energy. He established on Green Creek one of the first mills erected in that part of the county, and it has ever since been an important centre to the surrounding country. In 1746, the year after the county was organized, he was appointed one of its magistrates. he died in 1788. His wife was Mary Netherland, and his children, Matthew, Sarah, the wife of a Mosby, Elizabeth, the wife of John Digges, Catharine, the wife of a Steger, John, William, Mary, the wife of a Woodfolk, Benjamin, Ann, the wife of Hawes Coleman, and Judith, the wife of George Coleman. From this stem has sprung a greater number of families perhaps than from any other ever domiciled in the county. wikitree.com notesfor MARY NETHERLAND: Mary Netherland married William Lee Harris in York County, Virginia, in 1736 and they moved first to Goochland county and then further into the Piedmont area, settling on Green Creek, where William established one of the first grist mills of the area. They farmed a plantation of over 2,000 acres and had 11 children. Mary Netherlands Harris survived her husband by 11 years, dying in May 1799. Her son Benjamin lived with her and cared for her in her later years. They were among the foremost families of Albemarle County, Virginia, and left a large progeny there. wikitree.com ch of WILLIAM HARRIS and MARY NETHERLAND er: i. John served in the 11th Virginia Regiment of the Contenintal Army in the Northwest Territories and for his faithful survice was given a land grant in Kentucky after the war. His wife is related to the Jefferson's of Virginia, Capt Thomas Jefferson 1677-1730 being her great-grandfather. They established a "plantation" just outside of Versailles, Kentucky. John died when a tree fell on him while he was working his land. They had nine children: Harriett, John, Thomas, Margaret, Henry, Obedience, Robert, Caroline, Lucy. Served the Eighth Congressional District of Kentucky as a Unionist member of the United States House of Representative from 1861 to 1863. Died in Frankfort, Kentucky on July 26, 1863. US Senator, Kentucky Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. The most famous member of the Crittenden political dynasty, he was born near Versailles, Kentucky. He began his legal education as an apprentice to George M. Bibb, then went to Virginia for a degree in Law from William and Mary College. Admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1807, he began his political career when he accepted the position of Attorney General for the Illinois Territory. During the War of 1812, he worked as an aide to the Governor, then returned to Kentucky following the war. His congressional service began in the Kentucky House in 1811 where would serve again at later points in his career, during one term accepting the position of Speaker of the House. His United States Senate career began in 1817, and he would serve on and off for the next 44 years. Crittenden was also at one point a United States District Attorney (until he publicly disagreed with some of President Andrew Jackson's policies), and John Quincy Adams tried to have him appointed by a justice in the United States Supreme Court. In 1841, he was appointed to the Cabinet of William Henry Harrison as Attorney General of the United States. He was given that position again in 1850 by Millard Fillmore. In 1848, he was sworn in as Governor of Kentucky. Despite being pro-slavery, Crittenden remained loyal to the Union. In 1860, Crittenden was back in the Senate and was at the forefront of trying to affect a reconciliation between North and South. His first plan "The Crittenden Compromise" heavily supported slave states and was rejected by Lincoln and Senate Republicans. His next compromise, "The Crittenden-Johnson Resolution" was passed in 1861. It stated that the war was being fought to preserve the Union not to subjugate the South. During his life, Crittenden moved from one public position to another without much of a break in between a couple of those times being appointed to replace others. He died in Frankfort while campaigning yet again for re-election. He maintained his allegiance to the Union during the Civil War, and two of his sons elected to fight on opposing sides, with elder son George Bibb Crittenden serving as a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army, and younger son Thomas Leonidas Crittenden a Major General in the Union Army. ch of GOVERNOR CRITTENDEN and SARAH LEE er: 95. i. m REV JOHN CLARKE YOUNG; f. 12.08.1803, Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Usa; d 23.06.1857, Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky, Usa. notesfor REV JOHN CLARKE YOUNG: John Clarke Young was born on August 12, 1803, in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, the youngest child of Rev. John and Mary Clarke Young. As a boy, Young was educated by his grandfather, George Clark, and later studied for the ministry under John Borland at a classical academy in New York City. Afterward, he attended Columbia College for three years, but transferred to Dickinson, graduating in 1823 with honors. Upon graduation, Young returned to New York City, where he taught algebra for one year at his former school, and assisted the professor of mathematics at Columbia for the next. Young tutored at Princeton University for the next three years while pursuing theological studies at the school's seminary, graduating in 1828. The year 1828 also saw Young move to Lexington, Kentucky, at the invitation of John C. Breckinridge. There he became the pastor of McChord Presbyterian Church, founded by James McChord, Centre's first president. Following the resignation of Gideon Blackburn in 1830, the trustees of Centre College traveled east to find a replacement. There they spoke with Archibald Alexander at Princeton who advised them that "There is no man within my acquaintance better qualified for such a situation than John C. Young, who is already among you. It is a mistake to look out for old men if you can get young men who are qualified; the first must be going down, but the latter will be improving for a long time to come." The trustees followed Alexander's advice, and offered the presidency to Young. Inaugurated in November, 1830, Young took office at the age of twenty-seven, and found a college still struggling to survive. In its eleven year existence, Centre had graduated only twenty-five students, and in 1830 had an enrollment of twenty-three. In addition, the school was also suffering financial difficulties, a constant strain for most colleges in that era. Under the administration of Young, however, the college grew in size, strength, wealth, and prestige. The faculty was increased, the endowment fund enlarged, and the academic standards raised.Young's first graduating class, in 1831, was composed of only two students, but his last, in 1857, had forty-seven. In that year, the college could boast of a enrollment of over 250 students, and an endowment in excess of $100,000. Young had not fully relinquished his career as minister, and in 1834 accepted the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church in Danville. So popular was his ministry that, in 1852, the Second Presbyterian Church was organized in order to care for the students of Centre without overcrowding the parent church. Young twice served as moderator of the Presbyterian Synod of Kentucky, and, in 1853, as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the U.S.A. Young was frequently a voice of moderation in the Presbyterian Church. He remained loyal to the Old-School Assembly in the New-School controversy, but deplored the violence that led to the division. An owner of slaves himself, Young twice freed groups of his own slaves. He publicly debated in favor of gradual emancipation of slaves, but opposed the radical demands of the abolitionists. On his own campus, the slavery question required all of Young's skills as a diplomat and administrator. Young, and most of the faculty, came from the North, while the bulk of Centre's students were from the South. Young was seen by most as unwilling to dictate opinion on the matter, allowing free expression of ideas, but that did not save him from criticism from both sides. Young was married twice: first on November 3, 1829, to Frances Breckinridge, who died in 1837, and second, in 1839, to Cornelia Crittendon, daughter of John J. Crittendon. Of his ten children, one son, William C. Young, became president of Centre College from 1888 until 1896, and two daughters, Sarah and Eugenia, made generous gifts to the college in memory of their father and brother. During his twenty-seven years as president, it was often said that "Centre College was John C. Young and John C. Young was Centre College." When Young died in office on June 23, 1857, Centre College lost one of its greatest presidents. His legacy was an institution secure in its place as one of the country's strong liberal arts colleges. 92. An important figure in Los Angeles history, he founded the nearby city of Venice, California. Convinced that the area's mild climate would attract artists from around the world, Kinney decided to provide the setting for this cultural renaissance by re-creating Venice, Italy, just south of Santa Monica. In 1902 he began hiring architects and engineers to create a canal system and a master plan of buildings with magnificent Venetian colannaded facades. "Venice of America", as it was originally called, opened on July 4, 1905. Kinney's new city was Hollywood fantasy before Hollywood existed, with gondolas and costumed gondoliers plying the canals, arched bridges, exotic hotels, pavilions, and a 1600-foot amusement pier. Venice was incorporated into the City of Los Angeles in 1925. Today, little remains of Kinney's dream. Most of the canals were declared health hazards and turned into paved roads in 1929, and only scattered remnants of the original architecture still stand. By the 1950's Venice had become so seedy that director Orson Welles was able to use it as a stand-in for a decrepit Tex-Mex border town in his film "Touch of Evil" (1958). But around this time the cultural renaissance Kinney had predicted began to happen. A Venice club called The Gashouse was the headquarters of L. A.'s beatnik community, and its notoriety brought an influx of young artists looking for low-rent studio and living space. Now Venice is renowned as a colorful, freewheeling bohemian enclave. Abbot Kinney was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He inherited his father's successful tobacco business and made his own fortune manufacturing Sweet Caporal cigarettes. After travelling the world, he settled in Los Angeles in 1880 and ventured into real estate. In 1891 Kinney built the beach resort of Ocean Park, which became the nucleus of Venice. He died of lung cancer two weeks short of his 70th birthday. One of Venice's main thoroughfares, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, is named for him. ch of MARGARET THORNTON and ABBOT KINNEY er: i.
