Ruthven 1

: Ruthven of Ruthven
Sweyn probably father of ..
1. Thor, lord of Crawford a 1130
A. Sweyn, lord of Crawford a 1188
This Sweyn has already been reported on 'Crawford01' although that page shows that Thor, Sweyn's father, was son of Leofwine of Northumbria rather than a Sweyn. The duplication will be removed when clarification has been obtained on the issue reported below.
i. Alan or Walter of Ruthven
m1?. Eve dau of Swane Thorson of Crawford
m2?. Cecily de Maule dau of Sir William de Maule of Foulis
TSP's report that Alan of Ruthven was son of Sweyn of Crawford may not be right. However, there is that Alan of Ruthven's father was called Walter and that Sweyn was Alan's father-in-law. as now shown. Clarification is also needed whether Alan married twice and whether the children shown below were all by Cecily de Maule, as reported by TSP. The references to Sweyn of Crawford that he was both Alan's father and his father-in-law is unlikely as that would have been incestuous, which was probably more more commen in early times. Many pedigrees showing only the wife's first name and only sons and no daughters may indeed be suspected of this.
