: Holland of Chorlton, Holland in Essex, Holland of Glossop, Holland of Harleston, Holland of Knutsford, Holland of Mobberley, Holland of Quiddenham, Holland of Rhodes, Holland of Sandlebridge
Ho15-8. John Holland in Norfolk John is shown by various web sites as the 3rd son of Thurstan Holland of Denton d 1508. Both BEB1841 & Visitation start with the following Bryan who is described as "of Lea Hall in Glossop" by BEB1841 but as "of Denton Hall in co. Lanc." by Visitation. The latter might be taken to suggest that he was a son of a Holland of Denton rather than grandson, something which would ease the concern that there may be one too many generations shown here. However, in the absence of clearer support to the contrary, we provisionally show John as father of ...
1. Brian Holland of Lea Hall in Glossop, Derbyshire Described by various web site as "the Escheator". Most such sites show him as father of both Edward Holland of Glossop and John Holland of Wartwell Hall. Note that BEB1841 describes John son of Bryan son of John son of this Bryan as "of Wortwell, in Norfolk". We suspect that, unless both BEB1841 & Visitation are wrong, those other web sites have confused the generations.
A. John Holland of Harleston, Norfolk
John is described by BEB1841 as eldest son but is shown by Visitation as 3rd son. It is thought likely that his elder brothers dvpsp, making him the eldest surviving son.

m Mary Windham dau of Sir Edmond Windham of Felbrig, m1. ?? Bulwer of Wooddalling
1 Sir Thomas Holland of Quiddenham, Norfolk
m1/2. Mary Knyvet dau of Sir Thomas Knyvet or Knevett of Morningthorpe in Norfolk
BEB1841 reports just one marriage for Sir Thomas, to Mary Knyvet who is shown as mother of John & Edward. Visitation shows also the marriage to Elizabeth Wigmore, showing her as mother of Elizabeth, but no children by Mary Knevett. Visitation goes no more forward in time and does not make clear the order of the marriages. It is noted that BEB1841 Barker of Grimston Hall refers to a Mary Wigmore dau of Edward of Twickenham as widow of Sir Thomas Holland of Quiddenham which, leaving aside the confusion with names, would suggest that Thomas's 1st wife was Mary Knyvet Knevett though that leaves it odd why Visitation did not mention any sons of that marriage. Fortunately, TCB vol II, Holland of Quiddenham confirms that it was Mary Knyvet who was mother of ...
