https://colonialswedes.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/SCNewsFall07.pdf http://www.colonialswedes.org/forefathers/Fish.html Among the passengers arriving in New Sweden in 1648 aboard the ship Swan was a soldier by the name of Johan Fisk. He soon became a freeman and was among the 22 settlers who signed the petition of grievances against Governor Printz on 27 July 1653. After Printz left the colony, Johan changed his surname from Fisk [fish in Swedish] to Skovel [shovel in Swedish]. As Johan Skofel he signed the loyalty oath to the new governor, Johan Risingh on 9 June 1654 and a second complaint against Governor Printz on 7 July 1654. In the same year he sold his farm above Marcus Hook to Governor Risingh and moved to the area of Fort Trinity (present New Castle), where, after the fort was surrendered to the Dutch in 1655, Johan Skovel signed the loyalty oath to Governor Stuyvesant. The name of Johan Fisk s wife has not been discovered. It is also uncertain where and when he died. He apparently died before 1670 in present Pennsylvania. Records establish that he had at least two children: Caspar Fisk and Christina Fisk.

Notes for CASPER FISKE:
Today in New Sweden History: September 15, 1677 Today is the birthday of Johan Fisk, September 15, 1677. Although not born in Sweden, he consistently signed his name as Caspar Fisck (the Swedish word for 'fish'), and probably was the son of Johan Fisk, who came to New Sweden on the Swan in 1648.* Caspar was born February 4, 1651, presumably in New Sweden. On April 17, 1675 he married Margaret, born 1656, daughter of Gustaf Danielsson of Upland. In 1676. In partnership with Peter Petersson Yocum, Fisk was granted 500 acres called 'Pimmepaka' (Pennypack), where he lived briefly moving to West Jersey.
On August 7, 1682, both he and Marcus Lawrence, his wife's brother-in-law, obtained 100 acre tracts on the south side of Pennsauken Creek, where he lived until his death in 1708. Caspar Fisk was a Wicaco church warden in 1684 and 1693. In the later year his household included six children, Johan (born September 15, 1677), Gustaf (December 10, 1678), Elias (June 16, 1681), Caspar (February 9, 1684), Susannah (January 11, 1688) and Maria (May 15, 1693), plus two orphaned children of Marcus Lawrence. His eldest daughter Anna had left home and was living with her husband, Peter Petersson Stake. .After Caspar's first wife Margaret died in childbirth November November 14, 1697, he married Williamke, the widow of Hans Keen. In civil records Caspar's name was invariably written as Casper Fish and Fish became the family name. Source: The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware by Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig, p. 63. * Caspar Fisk's eldest son was named Johan. The only Fisk in New Sweden was Johan Fisk. Pastor Andreas Rudman reported in the Wicaco church book that Fisk arrived on the Swan (1648). A military roll list of New Sweden, current as of late 1648, inclues Johan Fisk among the recently-added common soldiers. Apparently he soon became a freeman, as no account was established in his name in the Monat Gelder Bach. Johan Fisk was one of the 22 freeman signing the 1653 complaint against Governor Johan Printz, but changed his name to Johan Skovel ('shovel' in Swedish) before signing a more detailed complaint against Printz in 1654. As Johan Shovel, he also signed the 1654 loyalty oath as an 'old freeman,' sold his plantation to Johan Rising the same year, and signed the loyalty oath to the Dutch after Rising's surrender in 1655.

The following story relates to him & others during that time frame. If we go back to the time of the Revolutionary War, the 1770s and early 1780s we find that there were slightly more than three million people living in the thirteen colonies. Had there been a Gallup Poll or Rasmussen Survey polling all those citizens it would have been found that about a million of them favored independence. Another million were loyal to the British rule, and the other million or so didn't care one way or another. don't recall ever learning this fact in public school. Col. Cleveland was among the first million, and so adamant was he that all the others join him he was willing to cut off the ears of those who expressed a preference to British rule. In extreme cases he was known to hang some Tories as they were called; quite naturally, of course, without benefit of due process. In Wilkes County, NC and in surrounding areas there was such fear of Col. Cleveland and his henchmen that an effort was made by a group of Tories to capture the Colonel and take him to Ninetysix, SC, a Tory stronghold, where he could be turned over to the British. He was, in fact captured in 1780 by William Ridley and Zachariah Wells. While they had the Colonel in captivity he was freed by his own men who overtook the captors. Ridley and Wells were both immediately hanged with plowshares even though at least one of the men had been shot during the fracas. Now there was in Wilkes County, or that part of Wilkes County that was to become in 1799 Ashe County, one Micajah Pennington who was a Justice of the Peace, and held his job thanks to his loyalty to the British. As a Loyalist he was not harmed by the so-called patriots, but there is a record of his possessions being confiscated. Micajah had several brothers, one being William whose wife in 1781 gave birth to a baby boy. The baby was named Wells, Was he named for Zachariah Wells? Your guess is as good as mine, and if your guess is yes you are probably right. In 1912 this part of Whitley County became McCreary County and was made famous by another colonel, Col. Harland Sanders, the inventor of Kentucky Fried Chicken. In 1818 the families took up living on Marsh Creek in Whitley. While there two of the children, Theophilus and Christina took spouses. In 1825 a former Indian fighter by the name of Pleasant Johnson of Wayne County, KY to the west of Marsh Creek was travelling through the area. One Angus Ross operated a tavern in his William died in 1812 and Micajah (pronounced with the "cage" sound) died in 1813. By then Wells had married Elizabeth Strunk, daughter of Johan Strunck in 1800. Wells and Elizabeth had four children: Theophilus (1802-1885) who married Penelope Jones; Christina, born 1804 and was married to Samuel Garland, whose father, Ambrose Garland had taken a Choctaw for his wife; Tabitha who was born in 1806 and later in life married Samuel Hardwick; and Arad who married at least three times. In 1818 all these children were still unmarried and they moved with their parents and Elizabeth's brother's family to what was then the western part of Whitley County, KY.home and provided ferry service to anyone wishing to cross Marsh Creek. Notater for LEONARD PETER HUFF: eonard HUFF (c 1780/1790 NC, possibly Wilkes County - not found 1830) moved through NC into the eastern part of KY, where he lived in Clay Co in 1810 and 1820. On __ in __ , he md Hannah BOLIN (or BOLING/BOWLING) (28 Apr 1785 Wilkes Co, NC - 22 July 1837, Perry Co, KY), dau of Reverend Jesse & Mary (PENNINGTON) BOLING. According to the book, Broken Shoestrings : a chronicle of the Huffs of Leslie County in the Commonwealth or Kentucky, by Lester Huff and Nelson Huff, Leonard grew up on his father's farm in Wilkes County, North Carolina. In 1807, he took a job with the Reverend Jesse Boling, working on his farm. It was there that he met Jesse's daughter Hanna, marrying her that year and moving into her room. Wilkes County had been formed in 1778, from Surry County. Surry County was formed in 1770 from Rowan County, which area had previously been part of a large portion of western North Carolina, encompassing from beyond the Yadkin to the Mississippi River, including all the upper valley of the Yadkin to the Virginia line. As a plausible father (or other relative) of Leonard, one Wm Huff appeared on the Wilkes County, NC 1790 Census. Jesse Bolin was also enumerated on the same census, the third household above that of William Huff.[1] There was a Bolin, but no Huff, on the 1800 census[2] A William Huff also appears in the State Census of North Carolina 1784-1787[3] Children recorded in Perry Co, KY, indenture as the infant heirs of Leonard HUFF were John; Daniel; Sarah; Betsy; Rachel; and Nancy: John HUFF (30 Sep 1809 NC - 27 June 1897 Leslie Co, KY) md Mahala BEGLEY (7 Sep 1811 - 24 Sep 1880 KY) and settled on Wilder's Branch of Middle Fork River in that part of Perry Co which became Leslie Co. Ch were Pleasant; twins Anna and Polly; William; John C.; Elizabeth; Edward; Winnie; Hiram; Harrison; Taylor; Blevins; Nancy; and George. Elizabeth "Betsy" HUFF (29 Dec 1812 Clay Co, KY - 10 Apr 1876) c 1835 md (1) William H. ADAMS and (2) Peter HAMBLIN. Ch were: Rachel HUFF (c 1816 Clay Co, KY - ) on 15 Sep 1835 md Robert COUCH and ch incl: ? Nancy HUFF (1 Dec 1818 Clay Co, KY - ) md Archibald COLLINS and had at least 4 ch. Daniel HUFF (Apr 1821/24 KY or 1818 VA - 15 Sep 1895 Laurel Co, KY) md Margaret "Peggy" FIELDS (1826 Harlan Co, KY - 29 Sep 1896 Laurel Co, KY), dau of William "Billy" and Lydia Margaret FIELDS, and lived in Perry Co in 1850, then later in Clay, Owsley, and Laurel counties.. Ch incl George HUFF; Mary HUFF; Nancy HUFF; Justice HUFF; Hannah HUFF; twins Sarah HUFF and Elizabeth HUFF; Jeremiah HUFF; Maxaline HUFF; William HUFF; Annie HUFF; and Esther HUFF. Daniel served in the Union forces during the Civil War, but he was not able to draw a pension because he had been charged with desertion. He could not read nor write, and he gave different ages and states of birth for the censuses. Sarah HUFF (12 Jan 1825 Clay Co, KY - ) md Justice BOWLING, Jr, of Shoal, KY, and had at least 4 ch. The above apparently settled into the Middle Fork River Valley near or on Wilder's Branch when they established families. It seems possible there were older children or relatives, and the following has been suggested. Lucy HUFF ( ) md Joseph EVERSOLE and had a family. (Nelson HUFF thought she was an older md sister, but other researchers indicate not. It is also possible she was an aunt, sister to Leonard or to Hannah. She has been said to have been Hannah's but not Leonard's daughter; there has been said to have been a second husband or liaison.) The 1820 census shows one son and four probable daus. This might include Lucy if the birth dates for the other sisters are correct. The first Perry Co indenture was by Hanah HUFF and her six minor heirs of Leonard HUFF, deceased, with Abel PENNINGTON, dated 12 Mar 1825 and witnessed by Justice BOLLING, Jesse BOLLING, and William CAMPBELL. [4] The remaining minor heirs on 23 Oct 1841 made an indenture with Joseph EBERSOLE, likely the same one whose wife was Lucy. (In KY counties, orphans were frequently indentured to relatives for their upbringing and training in a trade. Abel PENNINGTON and Joseph EBERSOLE were probable relatives of the family.) There was an earlier Leonard HUFF who was elected to the Road Crew in Orange Co, NC, in May 1761 to work from the county line to Hico. Leonard HUFF was one of several ordered to work on the road in Orange Co in May 1763. This Leonard HUFF of Orange Co, NC, has not been further identified. An important figure in Los Angeles history, he founded the nearby city of Venice, California. Convinced that the area's mild climate would attract artists from around the world, Kinney decided to provide the setting for this cultural renaissance by re-creating Venice, Italy, just south of Santa Monica. In 1902 he began hiring architects and engineers to create a canal system and a master plan of buildings with magnificent Venetian colannaded facades. "Venice of America", as it was originally called, opened on July 4, 1905. Kinney's new city was Hollywood fantasy before Hollywood existed, with gondolas and costumed gondoliers plying the canals, arched bridges, exotic hotels, pavilions, and a 1600-foot amusement pier. Venice was incorporated into the City of Los Angeles in 1925. Today, little remains of Kinney's dream. Most of the canals were declared health hazards and turned into paved roads in 1929, and only scattered remnants of the original architecture still stand. By the 1950's Venice had become so seedy that director Orson Welles was able to use it as a stand-in for a decrepit Tex-Mex border town in his film "Touch of Evil" (1958). But around this time the cultural renaissance Kinney had predicted began to happen. A Venice club called The Gashouse was the headquarters of L. A.'s beatnik community, and its notoriety brought an influx of young artists looking for low-rent studio and living space. Now Venice is renowned as a colorful, freewheeling bohemian enclave. Abbot Kinney was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He inherited his father's successful tobacco business and made his own fortune manufacturing Sweet Caporal cigarettes. After travelling the world, he settled in Los Angeles in 1880 and ventured into real estate. In 1891 Kinney built the beach resort of Ocean Park, which became the nucleus of Venice. He died of lung cancer two weeks short of his 70th birthday. One of Venice's main thoroughfares, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, is named for him. Barn av MARGARET THORNTON and ABBOT KINNEY er: i. They married, bought a chicken farm in Sharonville, OH, but when Forrest, Sr. took all of Mary's inheritance and disappeared, she had another nervous breakdown and had to return to the Longview Mental Hospital where she spent the rest of her life.
