The places for births and deaths of this and the following generation of the family indicate that
he did a lot of traveling in his lifetime, the question is why? His presumed son, Natheniel Pope, was known to have been a merchant (not a shop owner but a seafaring trader or shipowner) with possessions in Bristol besides his holdings in Virginia,
such possessions were generally not acquired in one lifetime in those days. So it seems likely that his father was also a merchant looking about for new investments.
