I corresponded with Nell Offutt Chesley, who did a lot of work on these families. The first Thomas SPRIGG died about 1674, and his wife was Catherine GRIFFIN. Will of Samuel GRIFFIN, 1703, says his sister Katherine SPRIGG was deceased. [VA Mag/o H. & Bio., 1:256]
The second Thomas SPRIGG, b. bef. 1630, m1. 3 Mar. 1650, in Virginia, Catherine [GRAVES], wid/o _ ROPER. The confusion with STONE seems to be a result of Thomas SPRIGG being uncle of Thomas STONE, but Verlinda GRAVES was second wife of Capt. Wm. STONE & mother of Thomas STONE. The will of Wm. STONE calls Thomas SPRIGG brother but meant brother-in-law. This Thomas SPRIGG (second generation) m2. Eleanor NUTHALL.
The date 29 Dec. 1704, was when the will was proved, not the date of death.
Thomas SPRIGG (third generation) m. Margaret MARIARTE (?Moriarti).
The will of Ann (BAKER GANTT) WIGHT [15 S 1725, pr. 26 May 1726, Pr. Geo. Co.] names dau. Margery SPRIGG and grandchildren Thomas, Ann, & Edward SPRIGG. [Margery {WIGHT} married one Thomas SPRIGG (fourth generation), apparently one born about 1694, married about 1715, deceased before 1725.] A Thomas Sprigg also married Margery Beall
Thomas SPRIGG (fifth generation), b. ca. 1716, was apparently the one
whose death was reported 3 Jan. 1782, in his sixty-seventh year, at West
River [M & D from the Maryland Gazette]. This Thomas married 14 Feb.
1737, Elizabeth GALLOWAY, dau/o Sophia & Richard, whose 1741 will names
dau. Eliz. SPRIGG.
Regarding Ressurection Manor: Is this not in St Mary's County, north
of MD235 A.K.A. Three Notch Road. MD 235 is on the ridge line above the
Patuxent river and the land slopes down gentlely to the river. Was this
property one of the six proprietary manors of St Mary's County owned by
the Calverts and rented out to the general public?
This area may well have been part of Calvert County when it was known
as (Patuxent?) County.
