Son of presumably English parents, most probably Philip
Nicholas (Ni9) and Frances ? of Manston Dorset. For it can be
established that in Williamsburg, Va., Dr. George Nicholas claimed to have
attended St. John's in Cambridge, while there is only a record of a George
Nicholas, son of Philip Nicholas of Manston, actually having matriculated
there in 1713. Though it is possible that our George Nicholas claimed to
have done what a different George Nicholas had done, there is no particular
reason to not believe that one and the same person is involved here.
And we have no evidence that this George Nicholas of Manston went anywhere
else, as he certainly did not return to live and die there. For there are
only burial records there for his father and mother. Hence for the
time being, the descent from the above mentioned Philip Nicholas will be
presumed while conclusive evidence is yet to be found. There continued
to be a Nicholas
as proprietor in Manston until 1800.
Born - about 1695
Matriculated at St. John's College in Cambridge in 1713 Married - After 1721 to Elizabeth Carter (Ct8) widow of Nathaniel Burwell (1680-1721) Died –before Aug. 22, 1734 at Williamsburg or James City, Virginia |
As a direct male descendant of the Nicholas Families of Alcannings
and Roundway he was entitled to bear the Nicholas Coat of Arms, as were
his sons and theirs etc.
|
George Nicholas and Elizabeth Carter had 3 known children:
Stepchildren 1 to 4, see appendix to page 8.2 His own three children by Elizabeth Carter were: (Ni7) Robert Carter Nicholas (b. 1725 or 8 - 8 Sept. 1780) married Anne, daughter of Col. Wilson Cary, of “Ceelys”. (Ni7-2) John Nicholas of Seven Islands b about 1727 (great-grandtfather of Mrs. Willie Harrison Nicholas, who married Philip Barbour Ambler). He married Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel Joshua Fry of Williamsburg. He was clerk of Albemarle 1749-1815, Burgess 1756 -58, and of the Convention of 1774-75, of Buckingham Co. (Ni7-3) George Nicholas, probably father of Colonel John Nicholas, long Clerk of Dinwiddie. Complete pedigree: Nicholas of Roundway. |
Research at the Museum of History in Devizes by He1-2 revealed hand
written notes on the Nicholas Family of All Cannings extending the pedigree
down to Philip Nicholas (Ni9) and and five children one of whom was George
born about 1695 and immetriculated in Cambridge seem to supply the missing
link, but for registration of this pedigree at the College of Arms primary
documentation (proven wills or contemporary written statement like baptismal,
marriage and burial records) is necessary for George Nicholas's (Ni8) descent
from Philip (Ni9) and for Philip's descent from Robert (Ni10). From there
on up the pedigree is registered.
Gen. Charles Parsons Nicholas (Ni3-5-1) managed to get a copy of this Philip's will dated 1736 indicating "that he was in straitened circumstances. He himself had gone to Oxford and was a lawyer, and two of his sons went to Cambridge as sizars, but I gather that the family was a victim of misfortune, possibly originating in the Cromwell era and in the subsequent loss of the All Cannings estate." As the Pedigree for Nicholas of Roundway - as shown in the "Wiltshire Visitation Pedigrees, 1623" - was closely connected with the Nicholas line in All Cannings as the first branching off of Nicholas lines probably during the reign of Henry VII, followed a generation later three new branches from the new House of Allcannings into those of Maningford and Brockenborough , Winterbourne Earles and Bischop's Cannings. This shows the Tudor age as the blossoming years for the Nicholas Family and is likely the reward for good service to Henry VII, VIII and Elizabeth I and only raises questions about what services were rendered. The Nicholas family of Winternourne Earls brought forth Sir Edward Nicholas, the Secretary of State under Charles II and, of course, was the latter's protagonist during the Cromwell era. Since the latter Nicholas family seems to have been among the leading Stuart loyalists before 1689, the "Bloodless Revolution" followed by the exile of James II may have brought a second wave of intrigues and reprisals that could have further weakened the Nicholas families of All Cannings and Roundway. The change of possession of the estates during this period lets us suspect something of the kind.

The obvious though unclear connection of these three Nicholas branches together with George Nicholas' immediate acceptance in the highest circles in Virginia and marriage to a granddaughter of Sarah Ludlow whose family had been located within easy visiting distance of all three Nicholas branches make not only his descent probable but also that there were earlier social or even family connections (about 1615 Edmund Ludlow had contacted John Nicholas of Winterbourne Earls to arrange a marriage between his daughter and the later Sir Edward Nicholas). Further, the peculiarities of the Wessex gentry's accent are certain to have quickly won the confidence and sympathy of Virginia gentry from eactly the same area and class. George Nicholas (Ni8) also seems to have had legal difficulties in London, where his grandfather-in-law, John Carter, had come from about 85 years earlier. So he may have come with other connections, references or recommendations as well.
Furthermore, it should ber bourne in mind that Gabriel Ludlow (Lu12),
Sarah's father and a cousin of Edmund Ludlow, had been receiver to and
administrator of a third of Charles I's estates until 1639, while this
same Edmund sat in the Rump Parliament that sentenced Charles I to death
and was the only member of this body to die of natural causes in bed and
in exile. All the others were hunted down and murdered by the Stuart Loyalists.
Whether Gabriel resigned in opposition to Charles I's attempts to rule
without parliament and by jailing its members without trial or just because
of age is not known, but his son, Gabriel, did fight on the side of parliament
and died in a battle, where the Royalists declaared that no quarter would
be given, the result of which was that the wounded like Gabriel could not
be helped and died in agony. Yes, the Roundheads knew why they felt that
Charles I ought to lose his head.
Dr. George Nicholas (Ni8) the immigrant to Virginia, is said to have come from Lancashire, England, and is said to have been a surgeon in the British Navy. While a dissertation on the history of the Nichols family of Virgina supposedly shows that he was convicted of forgery but the sentence was commuted to deportation to the colonies. Whatever the records may show this, it ought to be bourne in mind that contradictory documents are often presented as evidence in court by parties disputing each others claims, and in those days the genuine ones may as well have been declared forgeries as quickly as the forged ones declared authentic, when honest and reliable judges and not to mention forensic expertise were much harder to come by than today. In the days of Orangemen, families tainted with Jacobite or Republican connections could expect anything but justice in court. About as close a connection with Lancashire as can be found until now is only that William Nicholas(Ni15-2) was "slaine without the gatehouse in Runway" which - besides establishing that ther must have been significant fortifications there in the fifteenth century - indicates that this William may have fought for the House of Lnacaster at the Battle of Tewkesbury or the battle immediately preceeding it and pursued to his father's very gate-house after being routed as all other Lancaster forces only to be slaine a few yards from safe walls and family help.
There are records of his land patents in the Virginia records.
One of these follows:
"---the first patentee of land on James River, within the present County
(Goochland) was George Nicholas of Williamsburg. He made the entry, the
third in the County, of 2600 acres in 1729.u This is from Lyon G. Tyler's
Williamsburg, page 289.
In Wood's History of Albemarle, the same entry appears, but adds "including the present site of the Village of Warren".
His home in Williamsburg is said. to have been called "Retreat" .
He was a vestryman of Bruton Parish Church at Williamsburg. ¬He was in active practice of medicine at Williamsburg.
Quoting from the Journal of the House of Burgesses 1727-¬1734, page 62: “Since last session, College of William and Mary transferred and pursuant to charter of sd. College--a writ for electing one Burgess for said College--and thereupon George Nicholas is returned a Burgess to serve in the present General Assembly", etc. Quoted from page 173 of the Journal: "Ordered that a message be sent to the Governor to desire him to order a new writ to issue for electing a Burgess to serve, etc, in the Room" of Mr. Geo. Nicholas. deceased. Thursday, Aug. 22, 1734".

The following birth records found at http://familysearch.org show that
there were a number of people by the name of George Nicholas in England
at this time for whom evidence of their later lives ought to be investigated
before ruling them out completely, so a breakthrough may be difficult.
But since these records do not include the birth of a George Nicholas the
son of Philip of Manston, they may be deemed incomplete, and some are mere
conjecture and not record content at all:
