Stanley 6

: Stanley of Elford, Stanley of Horburne, Stanley of Pype, Stanley of West Bromwich
Sir Thomas Stanley of Elford, Staffordshire
m1 Maud Arderne dau of Sir John Arderne of Elford
St21. Sir John Stanley of Elford, Sheriff of Staffordshire b about 1423 d 1476
Some sites identify Sir John's first wife as Matilda, dau of Sir Richard Vernon, but, as we are concerned that there may have been some confusion with his second wife, we provisionally follow the Visitations in just identifying her as Matilda/Maud. We note that, as reported below, VCH has identified Humphrey, shown by the Visitations as John's 2nd son by his 1st wife, as son of a 3rd wife called Elizabeth who is not mentioned by the Visitations. Some further research is needed on the wives and the allocation of children between them.
