Mary Read (Nash) was the first child and oldest daughter of Col. Clement Read and his wife Madame Mary Hill Read. She was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia about 1732. She married Thomas Nash of Templeton Manor in Prince Edward County, Virginia in about 1752. Mary Read Nash and her husband Col. Thomas Nash had two children, Ann Owen Nash (Cameron) and Clement Read Nash. Mary Read Nash died in Lunenburg County about 1758. Her final resting place is presumed to be with her parents based on her early death. He was named in honor of his maternal grandfather. He was born before his mother’s death in 1758 and it is estimated that his year of birth was 1755 because he was an officer in the Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Continental Line in 1776 and it is supposed that he would have been 21 years of age at that time. Also, he is said to have been about 26 years old at the time of his death in 1781. After his mother’s death, his maternal grandmother, Madame Mary Read, was the guardian for him and his sister, Anne Owen Nash. As an older youth he went to North Carolina to live with his father. When his father died, he went to live with his uncle, Francis Nash. He was a 1st lieutenant in the 2nd N.C. regiment of the Continental Line of which his uncle Francis Nash was the Colonel. He later transferred to a Georgia Regiment of the Continental Line and held the rank of major at Yorktown where he was killed in battle in October of 1781 the day before the British surrender. He was unmarried. His grave site is not known. It is possible that he was buried at Bushy Forest, his grandmother’s home in Virginia, since she did not die until 1786. m2 JAMES MOORE, 20.01.1782, Craven County NC b 1730 d 1769. Notater for Elizabeth Nash: Elizabeth "Betsey" Nash was a child of Thomas Nash (1730-1769) by his second wife, Mary Holdcroft. She was a niece of Governor Abner Nash and General Francis Nash, two of her father's brothers. She was the widow of James Moore when she married William Henry Hill. She was the first wife of William Henry Hill. They had no children. Elizabeth Nash married James Moore in Craven County, N.C. in 1782. Elizabeth (Nash) Moore married William Henry Hill in Craven County, N.C. in 1788. Contrary to several sources, Elizabeth Nash was a niece, not a daughter, of Governor Abner Nash. Based on the inscription on the grave marker that lists her, her date of birth is 1762. Abner Nash’s first wife, Justina Davis Dobbs, was the widow of Arthur Dobbs who didn’t die until 1765. Thus, Abner Nash and his wife Justina could not be Elizabeth’s parents in 1762. The will of Thomas Nash probated in Chowan County, N.C. in 1769 mentions his children Clement and Ann Owen Nash (by his first wife Mary Read). His daughter Ann’s grandmother, Mrs. Read, is mentioned. It is stated in his 1769 will that he had four children by his second wife (Mary Holdcroft). That group of four was Elizabeth, John, Mary and Henry Nash. His youngest daughter Justina Nash is also mentioned. She was apparently a child by Thomas Nash’s third wife, Nelly Craven. The will of Thomas Nash mentions his brother, Abner Nash. Prior to the war, he was a lawyer, public official, and politician in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and was heavily involved in opposing the Regulator movement, an uprising of settlers in the North Carolina piedmont between 1765 and 1771. Nash was also involved in North Carolina politics, representing Hillsborough on several occasions in the colonial North Carolina General Assembly. Nash quickly became engaged in revolutionary activities, and served as a delegate to the first three Patriot provincial congresses. In 1775, he was named lieutenant colonel of the 1st North Carolina Regiment under Colonel James Moore, and served briefly in the southern theater of the Revolutionary War before being ordered north. Nash was made a brigadier general in 1777 upon Moore's death, and given command of the North Carolina brigade of the Continental Army under General George Washington. He led North Carolina's soldiers in the Philadelphia campaign, but was wounded at the Battle of Germantown on October 4, 1777, and died several days later. Nash was one of ten Patriot generals to die from wounds received in combat between 1775 and 1781.[1] He is honored by several city and county names, including those of Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville, North Carolina, and Nash County, North Carolina. History 11 SEP 1777 Battle of Brandywine General, USA History 4 OCT 1777 Battle of Germantown General, USAGeneral Nash was born around 1742 in Amelia County, Virginia[2] (in an area that would later become Prince Edward County) to John and Ann Owen Nash. His parents were originally from Wales, and several of his seven siblings,[2] including at least one brother,[3] were born there. One of Nash's brothers was Abner Nash, who later became a statesman in North Carolina.[4] A portion of John Collet's 1770 map of North Carolina depicting the environs of Hillsborough and the Haw and Eno Rivers By 1763, Francis Nash had moved along with Abner[5] to Childsburgh, which later became Hillsborough. There Francis started a law practice, and became a clerk of court in 1763,[4] a position which paid an annual stipend of £100 sterling.[6] The Nash brothers also owned substantial property in the town, and established a mill on the Eno River,[5] while Francis invested in a local store.[7] From 1764 to 1765, he served his first term in the North Carolina Assembly representing Orange County.[4] In 1770, Nash married Sarah Moore, the daughter of colonial jurist Maurice Moore, niece of James Moore, and sister of future United States Supreme Court Justice Alfred Moore.[8] Their union produced two daughters:[4] Ann, who died as a child, and Sarah, who went on to marry John Waddell, the son of North Carolina colonial soldier Hugh Waddell.[9] Sarah was the grandmother to American Civil War Confederate blockade runner James Iredell Waddell.[10] Francis Nash had two children out of wedlock, one of whom some scholars identify as a son also named Francis Nash, possibly born in 1770 or 1771.[4] The mother of one of the children was reported as Hillsborough barmaid Ruth Jackson.[11][12][13] Francis Nash the elder provided Jackson with property west of Hillsborough, and several slaves.[

Notater for NEEDHAM ALFORD: ALFORD SPURNS THREAT In the Spring of 1832, Needham J. Alford, a Methodist preacher and Sumner Bacon, a Cumberland Presbyterian, held a two-day meeting in Sabine County, near where the town of Milam now stands. Mexican officials had forbidden the meeting and there was other opposition. The preachers were planning to fill their appointment. Just before the hour, a person appeared on the ground declaring he would horsewhip the first preacher who entered the stand. Alford arrived and someone repeated the threat to him. "Well," said he, "I am as able to take a whipping as any man on this ground." Alford was a muscular, strongly built man, a stranger to fear, who had gone by the name of the "Bulldog Preacher" in Louisiana. The antagonist looked for a moment at the brawny arm of the preacher stretched out at full length over the buck board, and quietly retired. - Martha Wolverton England ALFORD, NEEDHAM JUDGE (1789–1869). Needham Judge Alford, Methodist preacher, was born July 12, 1789, in North Carolina, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Bryant) Alford. He held a two-day meeting near the present site of Milam in the spring of 1832 with Sumner Bacon, a Cumberland Presbyterian. The meeting was a test of their determination to preach in the area against the opposition of James Gaines and others. When a man named Johnson threatened to horsewhip the first preacher who entered the stand, Alford, a strong man, said, "I am as able to take a whipping as any man on this ground," and Johnson, taking notice of the muscular preacher, quietly retired. Before coming to Texas, Alford had been known in Louisiana as the "bulldog preacher." He was married to Martha Waddell (Waddle) in Franklin County, Mississippi, on February 18, 1815; they had nine children. He died on September 19, 1869, near Horn Hill in Limestone County.
