1 We have seen the suggestion in a web site that the/a Lascelles family descended
from Dolphin of Appletreewick. However, 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood'
suggests that the following Picot possibly came from Lassele in Normandy
whilst TCP Lascelles suggests that "From his name he is supposed to have
been a Breton". TCP does note that "There were several families of this
name in the North of England in the 12th and 13th centuries" thereby leaving
open the possibility that there may have been different families of different
roots which happened to have the same name.
| 2 TCP covers only one line of this family, the first shown here, but that contradicts what is reported by 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' and the Visitations. As we give precedence to TCP, this causes us some problems, not helped by there being some contradictions/alternatives included within the Visitations. The following should be viewed as provisional and subject to change. We italicise where we have relied wholly on 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood'. | A similarity of names gives reason to speculate if this family is closely related to the de Saye family in the direct male line. | |||||||||||||||

Visitation
Nottinghamshire shows that Sir Walter married Agnes, dau/coheir of Sir
Robert Rocliff. 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood' identifies her
as Agnes, dau of Sir Richard Roecliffe. We note that Visitation Yorskhire,
1563-4, Roclyff shows there was a Sir William Lascelles, roughly around
this time, who married a Jennet,
dau of Sir Richard Roclyff, and was father of William father of William
father of John. We do not have enough evidence to assume that Agnes was
the same person as Jennet and that Sir Walter was the same person as Sir
William but thought it worthwhile to draw attention to these facts.

1
In its section on the Lascelles of Escrick, 'The History and Antiquities
of Harewood' mentions this Richard but says no more on his descendants.
In another section, on 'Lascelles of Sowerby and Brackenburgh', the book
starts with a Sir Roger Lascelles of Sowerby and Brackenburgh who by Isabel
was father of another Sir Roger who married Margaret Norton and 4 daughters
- the same 4 heiresses mentioned by TCP Lascelles as being the only issue
of Roger, Lord Lascelles see above. This contradiction is the main reason
why we have not obtained confidence in that book.
2 Visitation Yorkshire starts its second section with the undermentioned Sir Roger who married Margaret Norton very closely to its first section which ended with the 4 daughters of Lord Roger. However, the Harleian Society's report on the Visitation, upon which we rely, appears not to connect the two sections correctly, according to TCP. It is possible that John Jones, when preparing 'The History and Antiquities of Harewood', saw a connection between the sections which led him to think that Sir Roger was brother of the above-mentioned 4 heiresses incorrectly, according to TCP. 3 Provisionally, we presume that it is possible that the Lascelleses of Sowerby & Brackenborough descended from the above Richard and show this here as a possible ancestry for the undermentioned Sir Roger. |
