The first few generations for this family come solely from 'Pedigree of George and Gorges' may have come from Gaurges in the Cotentin, Normandy indicating Gorges as the earlier spelling of the name. 'Pedigree', which acknowledges some uncertainty on the first generations, favours spelling the family name as Georges for those early generations and George thereafter. The spelling change is only shown for the Georges of Baunton.
