| This marriage is not recorded by TSP Morton but BP1934 Carmichael-Anstruther of Carmichael and Anstruther identifies John's first wife as "Margaret Douglas, dau. of Thomas Douglas of Lochleven, ancestor to the Earls of Morton". However, there is some uncertainty on this as if she had married John after 1541 then that would be late in his lifetime he had already outlived his eldest son who had been killed at the battle of Pinkie in 1547.
