Finding data on this relatively small family has been rather difficult but gradually things are emerging in the Internet. As for the name itself it seems to be a Scandinavian patronymic form meaning "son of Clark". Clark is an English name derived from Latin clerus = priesthood, from which the word "clerk" and the name "Clark" arose because no one else could write and keep records in the outgoing "dark ages".

So the name may stem from any of the Danelaw areas of Britain or any other area settled by the Vikings like the Orkney Island. But the name is rare enough to expect one man to have been the ancestor of all of that name. The first known of this name seems to have left an estate in Sussex Co. Delaware in 1706, while the area of Wilmington Del. was originally a Swedish-Finnish settlement founded by the former Governor of New Amsterdam in 1638. The English Clarksons report several different earliest know ancestors living in Scotland, Lancashire, Middlesex and Surry in the 18th and early 19th centuries, one of whom is likely to be 2nd to 5th great nephew of our immigrant Clarkson.
