Baliol 1: Baliol of Barnard Castle, Baliol of Cavers, Baliol of Scotland, Baillie of Hoprig
The sources we have found for this family support and contradict each other as shown below. However, they mainly start off with ...
Guy de Bailleul or Baliol a 1090
1. Bernard or Barnard de Baliol
m Mathilde
BE1883 reports that Guy was succeeded by the Barnard who was 1st of Barnard Castle "or, by some accounts, the son of Barnard de Baliol". The 'jarnou' web site identified below shows the Barnard who was 1st of Barnard Castle as son of Bernard who, by Mathilde, was also father of those shown in B+ below son of Sir Hugues of Bailleul who was son of the above Guy de Bailleul. 'Lives of the Baillies' like BE1883 shows Guy de Baliol as father of ...
A. Barnard de Baliol, 1st of Barnard Castle a 1138
m Agnes de Pincheni or Picquigny
BE1883 and 'Lives of the Baillies' show the following descent but the 'jarnou' web site shows Hugh, father of the John who married Devorgilla of Galloway, as brother rather than son of ...

m 1233 Devorgilla of Galloway d 28.01.1289-90, dau of Alan, Lord of Galloway, Constable
Devorgilla was a great-niece of the Scots Kings Malcolm IV and William 'the Lion'. It was because of this connection that her son John became entitled to claim the throne.

ii+ other issue - Henry b c1284/5, dsp 16.12.1332, Margaret or Agnes or Maud b c1282, d unm, Anne b c1286
There is some confusion re the identity of King John's daughters. Various sources identify 2 daughters but they are named differently, albeit normally Margaret and Anne. Various sources including 'RoyalData' and GenEU suggest that the younger daughter married Brian FitzAlan of Bedale but TCP FitzAlan makes no such suggestion whilst RoyalData notes that it is not certain that Anne ever existed.

3 William de Baliol 'le Scot' b c 1251, d c 1313, Chamberlain of Scotland
William is sometimes identified as brother of King John above. This is thought to be because he is known to have been a brother of Alexander of Cavers, the Chamberlain, and Alexander is sometimes erroneously described as brother rather than cousin of King John.

m Hawise de Boyville dau of Ralph de Boyville de Levyngton
