 Dominus Other who flourished in the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042 - 1066 a.d.)
Dominus Other was said by the older written source to be the son of Othoere (Wi30), who was presumed to have been the same sea-captain who entered service for Alfred the Great before the Danish invasion. (As this would be a span of over 160 years between the beginning of Alfred's reign and Edward the Confessor, Dominus Other in more likely a 2nd greatgrandson of any Othoere who might have spoken with Alfred the Great. The absence of any mention of Othoere in Asser' biography of Alfred would also place any such meeting after 887 a.d. "Dominus" occurs only in the Internet source given below, while the older written source does not show this as a first name, hence it probably comes from and older Latin source and is not meant as a name but a title equivalent to "Master" as used for the owner of a manor or plantation or for his sons.  From this we may conclude that Other had slaves.) The Internet source gives Gherardo Gheradini Wi30, a Florentine who came over with the Edward the Confessor. This latter source shows at least realistic dates and seems more credible.

Otho, whose name is sometimes spelled, Othere or Other, was a member of the Florentine family, the Gherardini. The “Otho” comes from his father’s given name of Ottorus which is sometimes spelled as Othoer. While he was Duke of Tuscany between 1006 and 1100, it would be 500 years before the famous de Medic family would be Grand Dukes of Tuscany. He came to the court of King Edward the Confessor in about 1056, ten years before the Norman Conquest of England, He passed into Normandy, and in 1057 crossed into England where he became a favorite with Edward the Confessor, and obtained extensive estates from the monarch.

The ancestors of Baron Windsor supposedly played a conspicuous role in early English history as Thanes of Saxon England ("Thane" was the Saxon word for a freeman granted land by the king in return for military service but lower in status than a nobleman or earl. The Normans introduced the word "esquire" for this status.) The ancient name "Other" was revived by the Windsors after 1700, as it had been a name of power in Saxon times. The first recorded "Other" or "Othoere" so far as can be discovered was the great Norse Viking, "Othere, the old sea captain, who dwelt in Helgoland," commemorated as the discoverer of the North Cape in the appendix to King alfred' translation of Orosius, so finely set to verse by Longfellow: "His figure was tall and stately, Like a boy's his eye appeared; His hair was yellow as hay, But threads of a silvery gray Gleamed in his tawny beard. Hearty and hale was Othere, His cheek was the colour of oak; Like the sea-tide on a beach,  As unto the king he spoke. And Alfred, King of the Saxons, Had a book upon his knees, And wrote down the wondrous tale Of him who was first to sail Into the Arctic seas." Alfred ascended the throne in 871, and he took down, as he states, from the lips of the old sea-king himself the account of his discoveries in the wild North Sea. Othere was a wealthy man at home, as he informed the king: "I own six hundred reindeer, With sheep and swine beside; I have tribute from the Finns, Whalebone and reindeer-skins And ropes of walrus-hide. I ploughed the land with horses, but my heart was ill at ease, For the old seafaring men Came to me now and then With their sagas of the seas."

Rich though Othere was at home, and though he received tribute from the Finns, he nevertheless yielded to the solicitations of Alfred, and consented to remain in England, where honours and wealth awaited him. From this Ohtere, who related his wondrous voyage to King alfred a thousand years ago, and who is described as "rich and powerful lord," the Windsor family has descended. The Othere race continued in unbroken power through all the fluctuations and violent changes of the Danish usurpation.  In the reign of Edward the Confessor, the long sound of the name is found shortened, for the Thane of that day is called Other, the son of Othoere. The seat of his power was Stanwell, a princely domain on the north bank of the Thames, about two miles from Staines, and standing nearly between it and Old Windsor. His vast estates extending over considerable portions of five counties - Middlesex, Bercseire, Hamtseire, Bochinhamseire and Surry. Notes: In the Complete Peerage under Wyndesore (of Cumberland): William de Wyndesore, son and heir of Alexander (d. 1342/3) and his wife, Elizabeth (d. 1349, during the Black Death), born 1322-28, a minor in 1342/3 but of age by 1349, became Lord Wyndesore (1383/4), married (c. 1376) Alice Ferrers, the notorious court beauty and mistress of Edward III. William was King's Lieutenant in Ireland 1368-1371/2 and again 1373-1376, and is remembered as the true founder of the Irish Parliament. He held Dungarvan and Black Castle (c.1367) in Ireland. In 1376 he was allowed to buy goods in Ireland to provision his castles in Wales and in Mar 1376/77, he was among those lords with lands in Wales who was warned of a possible Welsh attack. The precise connection between the Wyndesores of Cumberland and the Windsors of Stanwell has not been ascertained, though doubtless one exists. It has been suggested that Alexander, the founder of the Cumberland family who held lands in Compton, Surrey, was a younger son of William de Windsor, constable of Windsor Castle, son and heir of Walter fitz Other, who held Compton, Surrey, at the time of the Survey (Doomsday Book) and whose descendants were overlords there until 1541.

Notes: The Complete Peerage vol.XIIpII,p797-798. Edward entertained Queen Elizabeth I in great splendour at Bradenham in 1566, on her return from visiting the University of Oxford. On Edward's death in 1574, Bradenham passed to his eldest son, Frederick. Edward Windsor left instructions for Frederick to build and endow almshouses, for a master and six poor men of the Parish. Strangely this bequest was never executed.
