Wi10 William Wilson of Hampton Virginia and James Wilson of Norfolk County Virginia

Wi11. James Felix Wilson b about 1575 (this seems about 20 years too old to be the father of the following, perhaps grandfather) The Wilson coat of arms:
Sable on a Cross engrailed, between four Cherubims, or, a human heart of the first, wounded on the left side ppr. And crowned with a " Crown of thorns, Vert.
William and James Wilson were presumably descendants of William Gunn founder of the Sept Wilson of Clan Gunn and Williamsons of Caithness.

The Gunn clan motto is "Aut Pax Aut Bellum" meaning "Either peace or war".

The surnames regarded as septs (sub-branch) of Clan Gunn include:
Enrick, Gallie, Gaunson, Georgeson, Jameson, Jamieson, Kean, Keene, MacComas, MacCorkill, MacCorkle, MacIan, MacKames, MacKeamish, MacKean, MacManus, MacRob, MacWilliam, Mann, Manson, Nelson, Robinson, Robison, Robson, Ronald, Ronaldson, Sandison, Swan, Swanson, Will, Williamson, Wilson, Wylie.
In "The Wilson Family - Somerset and Barter Hill Branch" (Observer Printing House, Charlotte, NC, 1950) author Harry Herndon McLean asserts that our Wilson line's first ancestor to arrive in North America was JAMES FELIX WILSON, an English lawyer who had lived in Scotland prior to departing for the colonies, and who had once served as solicitor to Queen Elizabeth.

According to McLean, James Felix Wilson's family arrived in Jamestown, Virginia in 1650, but the newcomers were not welcomed by the previously-arrived colonists, who had endured several years of terrible hardships. (The above may be better Understood that He was a Scottish lawyer and staunch Stewart Royalist, who left Scotland immediately after the beheading of Charles I, while many of the Virginians, who had arrived before that, may have been Republicans.)

Although there may be many unrelated Wilson lines, the author's autosomal DNA test results do show a relatively high percentage of Orcadian ancestry, meaning that several lines led back to this area. Paternally for the author, only McConnell/MacDonald seems to fall into this pattern. His maternal grandfather had two Duncan lines paternally and Jamison maternally, the latter being one of the septs of the Gunn Clan founded by Gunni Andresson in Caithness, his maternal grandmother has a Cumming/MacLean ancestor of Inverness maternally and this Wilson line paternally, which is also one of the septs of the Gunn Clan, as well as Buchanon, a Scots-Irish Smith line which all may have some early intermarriages with Clan Gunn and other Orcadian roots.

In conclusion, DNA evidence makes a descent of our William Wilson from Gunni Andresson over the latter's 8th great grandson William Gunn seem likely, although other sources of this DNA are possible and a check on the Wilson Y DNA project is needed.

The Ilse of Orkney did have an indigenous, probably more Pictish, population before Viking times, but the Norwegian settlement was so intensive, that the language there became Norn, a more Norwegian language with little influence from the previous population, which was still spoken there as late as 1700. There is, however, little reason to assume that the Orcadian genome did not include a high share of that of the indigenous population, and a somewhat higher percentage of natives may have been taken into servitude by a smaller number of Norwegians leading to rather thorough DNA mixing in time.

Willis Wilson died November 19th, 1701 and was the first person buried in St. John’s Churchyard in Hampton, Virginia. There was once a large stone slab over the grave with the coat of arms and inscriptions on it.  The slab is said to have been destroyed by Federal troops during the War Between the States.; Fortunately the inscriptions were copied before they were destroyed and have been preserved. They read:

“Under this stone lyes the body of Capt. Willis Wilson who departed this life on the 19th day of November in the year 1701, it being the 28th year of his age. The memory of the just is blessed.  May his memory be recorded in everlasting remembrance.  Under this stone also lyes the bodies of Col. William Wilson and of Jane, his wife, the parents of the before mentioned Capt. Wilson.  The said Col. Wilson died June 17th, 1713 aged 67 years, and his said wife May 15th, 1713 aged 58 years and left an only daughter surviving.”

The oldest Anglican parish in continuous existence in America. Established in 1610, this is the fourth church built in the parish. It was erected in 1728 in the shape of a Latin cross.   Its walls are two feet thick.  The bricks are laid in Flemish Bond.  Its communion silver bears the hallmark 1618 and has been termed “the most precious relic in the Anglican Church in America. These venerable walls have suffered during the revolutionary war, the war of 1812, and the war between the states."
Approaching the church you will notice the graves of many former rectors and parishioners of the parish.  The oldest grave is that of Capt. Willis Wilson who died in 1701.  The Wilson family owned land in this area, and apparently, the 1728 building was built next to the family burial ground so that their graves occupied a place of honor at the altar end of the church.

Yet when Mrs. Scrum looked for William and Mary Wilson's graves there werve no grave markers and I think it's sad because the church was built around them. Their son Willis does have a marker.

The History C up to William Wilson

In 1607, there was a Native American village “pleasantly seated” on a waterfront site known as Kecoughtan.  With its good fishing, abundant fruit trees and well-tended cornfields, it was a remarkably good place to live.  When the first English settlers arrived in 1610, they forcibly removed the inhabitants.  Centuries of Native American occupation at Kecoughtan came to an end.

William Claiborne was the most famous of all the early settlers of the region and in 1620 he sailed from England to Virginia.  He was a surveyor, Treasurer of Virginia and Secretary of State.  He was granted 150 acres of land located near the present Settlers Landing Road where he established a trading post.

In 1680, this land had become the property of a ship captain named Thomas Jarvis.  Under the Town Act, the General Assembly had fifty acres set aside for the layout of the proposed town on Jarvis’s land. Jarvis was the second husband of Elizabeth Duke, daughter of Sir Edward Duke, and widow of the celebrated Nathaniel Bacon, Jr.  They had only one son, Thomas.  In 1684 Jarvis made his will directing that his entire estate be sold to pay off his debts.  His wife succeeded in paying only a portion of her husband’s debt. In an ugly court battle, William Wilson purchased and took position of Jarvis’s estate.

Born in 1646, Col. William Wilson was the most prominent person of Elizabeth City County.  He was a wealthy planter and a successful merchant in Hampton.  He also accumulated a large estate. For many years he was the presiding justice, County Lieutenant and also a Magistrate for Elizabeth City County. He was appointed to the House of Burgess representing Elizabeth City in 1685, 1688 and 1703. He was the Royal Naval Officer of the Lower James District 1699-1710.

His wife was Jane Wilson. They had two children, a son, Willis and a daughter, Mary. Willis Wilson was born in Hampton in 1672.  He was Justice of the Peace, Captain of Militia, was elected Burgess in 1692 but was declared incapable of serving because he was under age.  Mary was beautiful, a typical belle of the period, vivacious and charming, with a townhouse in Hampton and a country home at Ceely’s. She was married three times.  She was first married to William Roscoe and he died.  Then she married Col. Miles Cary, and finally on his death she married Archibald Blair of Williamsburg where her home is still standing.  Her (?grand-)daughter, Sally, was the young lady who refused George Washington’s marriage proposal at Carter’s Grove and married Baron George William Fairfax instead.

In 1691 William Wilson acquired Ceely’s Plantation. In 1706 he built his home, a handsome two story large building with wings at each end and a spacious portico supported by white columns. It laid along the river and adjoined the present Newport News. It stood about a block from the old Mary Immaculate Hospital with a magnificent view of Hampton Roads. He later added some 2,000 neighboring acres of property to the estate.
