Stanley: Stanley of Hooton, Stanley of Stanley, Stanley of Stourton
St18 Sir William de Stanley of Stourton, Stanley and Hooton b 1368, d 1428 He succeeded to Hooton by right of his wife in 1398, and in 1397 received a grant of a life annuity of 100/- upon being retained for service for life. In 1399 he was commissioned to raise eighty archers and take them to Ireland in the king's train, but by May 15, 1399 he was the subject of an arrest warrant, probably as a suspected sympathizer to Henry of Lancaster. King Richard II surrendered at Flint Castle on August 19, 1399, and on September 30 the reign of Henry IV began. By Jan 28, 1400 William was of record as conservator of the peace in the Cheshire hundred of Wirral. By September 22, 1401 he was recorded as a knight who had rendered homage. He was in Ireland serving his brother as Lord Deputy in 1401, and helped build defences against the Welsh rebels of Owain Glyndwr, and then in the summer of 1402 was engaged in a naval expedition at a wage of 2/- per day. However, he received a parden for Percy's Rebellion in 1403 having already been appointed a commissioner in Wirral on October 11. His inquisition post mortem was dated 6 Hen. VI 1427-1428. He held the manor of Hooten in the Hundred of Wirral, as well as the manors of Great and Little Storeton, the bailiwick of the forest of Wirral and lands in Poulton-Lancelyn, Upton and Brumbrough.

m 1514 Andrew Barton of Smithill. Having made a settlement of his manors and lands in 1514, and seen his son Andrew married to Anne or Agnes daughter of Sir William Stanley of Hooton, he renounced the world, and in July 1516 entered the monastery of the Observant Friars at Richmond in Surrey, and was there professed. fn. 23 Andrew Barton added a moiety of the manor of Oswaldtwisle fn. 24 to the family possessions, recorded a pedigree at the visitation of 1533, fn. 24a and died in 1549, leaving a son and heir Robert, then twentyfour years of age. fn. 25 Robert Barton, who succeeded, was the justice to whom George Marsh surrendered in 1554; the story went that Marsh, in his emphatic denial that his teaching was heretical, stamped so forcibly on the hall pavement at Smithills that the mark of his foot remained in the stone. fn. 26 Robert Barton dying childless in 1580, fn. 27 the manors went to his brother Ralph, reader in Gray's Inn. Ralph, who died in 1592, fn. 28 was succeeded by his son Randle fn. 29 and grandson Sir Thomas. fn. 30 From: 'Townships: Halliwell', A History of the County of Lancaster: Volume 5 1911, pp. 12-20. www.british-history.ac.uk/
