| Believed to have descended from the branch of the MacDonald Clan seated in Glengarry due to DNA comparison are the following. As most spelled their name MacDonnell and only one listed in the pedigree for the Glengarry line I am provisionally inclined to believe the progenitor for Americans with the Glengarry version of DNA was Angus McConeill Vic Angus (d before 17.03.1607) who married Katherine Mackintosh. However, the families below having a progenitor from Antrim Ireland seem to descend from Alexander MacIan 'Cathanach' of Islay or Sorley Buie MacDonnell of Antrim, unless the above mentioned Angus or any son of his had to take refuge there as a consequence of the feud with the Campbells. There are 4 to 7 intermittant generations between this person and the immigrants in America and some of these may have emigrated to plantations in Ireland and only emigrated to America in a later generation, as happened in many families. | |||||||||||||||||

| 1-1-1-1-1 | William N. Masoner, It appears that William (and all of
his children) dropped the "er" from Masoner and used the name Mason. In
the 1880 census Iona McClanahan (niece), and Walter McClanahan (brother)
were living in the household of James McClanahan. In the 1900 census, Willie
Mason and his wife, Ionie, and their family are living next to James McClanahan.
Information submitted to Ancestry World Tree by Charles Wesley Smith show
that William N. Masoner married Iona McClanahan on 8 Feb 1894 in Bracken
Co., KY. Smith identifies Iona McClanahan as the daughter of Walter Holiday
McClanahan. Based upon above information, I have assumed that William N.
Masoner is the person identified as Willie Mason in the 1900 census and
Ona McClannahan, Iona McClanahan and Ionie Mason are the same person.William
Mason/Masoner apparently died between 1900 and 1910 because in the 1910
census, his wife, Iona was It is more likely that he died between 1904

was Malvina Masoner or Edward Foster's second wife, Julia. It did, however,
provide enough information for me to find her in Fayette Co., KY in the
1900 through 1930 census reports. Emma's husband was Gabe David Martin.
The 1900 census shows Emma was born in Oct 1876, Gabe Martin was born in
Feb 1868 and they had been married 7 years. According to the 1920 and 1930
census, they had an adopted son, Harold Patton (b, abt 1918), who is probably
the Rev. H. M. Patton who was the informant on Emma's death certificate.

Mr. Nesbit was born at Tuscola, Douglas County, Illinois, January 24, 1865. Joe K. Nesbit was three years old when the family came to Warsaw, which place, like others, was in a process of adjustment after the close of the Civil war. When twelve years old he began to be self-supporting, finding work on the farm of J. H. McDaniel, near Warsaw, where he remained for six years and going then Gallatin County, where he remained three years. In the meanwhile, determined to obtain a good education, he applied himself to study and reading under the super-intendence for a time of Reverend Speers, and while many youths of his age were spending their evenings in pursuit of pleasure he was busy with his books. Mr. Nesbit was about twenty-one years old when he went to work for David Carr, tobacconist, at Warsaw, with whom he remained for ten years, going then to the firm of William. Taaffe & Son, undertakers, and when Mr. Taaffe died in 1897 he bought the business from Mrs. Taaffe and has conducted it ever since. He has modernized the business, has introduced special features of service, owns a fine undertaking parlor on Main Street, and practically has no competitor in funeral directing in the county. He is a licensed embalmer and was appointed by Governor McCreary to fill out the unexpired term of Stanley Milward on the State Board of Embalmers, serving one year. In political life Mr. Nesbit has always been a democrat. Under appointment he served as deputy County Court Clerk and deputy Circuit Court Clerk of Gallatin County from January, 1906, until January, 5910. In November, 5909, he was elected County and Circuit Court Clerk, and assumed the duties of his office in January, 1910, and his efficiency may be judged by the fact that he was re-elected in 5953 and 1917, the terms covering four years. Mr. Nesbit's offices are in the court house at Warsaw, where his fellow citizens always meet with intelligent attention and courteous treatment. Mr. Nesbit is a member of Tadmore Lodge No. 108, F. and A. M., Warsaw, of which he is a past master; Warsaw Chapter No. 97, R. A. M., of which he is a past high priest; Covington Commandery No. 7, K. M. Mr. Nes¬bit is the owner of several valuable properties, these including his place of business, his comfortable modern residence on Pearl Street, and one-third of the Odd Fellows Cemetery plot at Warsaw. During the World war he was active and prominent in the patriotic movements that had so much to do with its fortunate termination, being one of the willing and unselfish workers for the great cause. He served as chairman of the Gallatin County Draft Board and also was chairman of the Gallatin County Council of Defense. Mr. Nesbit attends -the Methodist Episcopal Church. | ||||||||||||||||

This appears to be William's Rebecca.
I have not found William, James or Eliza in any 1870 census
I did find this marriage listed in a Bourbon Co., KY marriage index.

know if Rebecca might be a nickname for Margaret or if this is a different
Wm. McConnell.

The following website excludes the latter from having been our William's
father but mentions a first cousin by the name of William. The William
of McConnell's Station was born in Pennsyvania in 1753, which was just
after the normal period of indenture for those deported following the Battle
of Culloden.

William McConnell's Station [1]
This station was established by a William McConnell who reportedly built a stone house on the west side of Paris Pike. This McConnell was not the same one who helped to settle and establish Lexington but rather a latecomer. Ardery (1934) reported that William McConnell bought 1000 acres from James Buckhannon in 1788 and established his home on this tract. Bourbon County Deed Book "A" (p. 157) does indeed contain an indenture between McConnell and Buckhannon, dated February 9, 1788 and containing 1000 acres on Houston Creek. No survey plat was drawn for this deed nor were environmental features clearly described. However, James Buckhannon (or Buchanan) acquired 1400 acres on Houston Fork through assignment from John Holder and John Martin (Virginia Survey Book 5, pp. 358-9). The survey calls for corner "B" in the plat to specify a sugartree and hoopash near a sinkhole. The corresponding corner in the plat described by the indenture between Buckhannon and McConnell also specifies a hoopash near a sinkhole. It seems reasonable that McConnell's parcel was partly taken from this tract. Superposition of the two plats, matching the southwest corners and utilizing locational clues in the earlier survey allows for the tentative placement shown in Figure IV-16.
The reported location of the site (designated 15Bb75) contains clear evidence of a former domestic structure (Figure IV-16). A rectangular depression marks the site of the house. A nearby burned tree stump is testimony of the fire which destroyed the house before 1934. observed artifactual debris around the depression included 19th and 20th century materials such as refired brick, transferprinted and undecorated earthenware, glass and linoleum. The early occupation has undoubtedly been obscured by substantial quantities of later occupational debris. However, the potential for preserved early remains is judged to be good. Limestone used in house construction has probably been removed in the course of converting the field to horse pasture. An associated springhouse covering a copius spring has been rebuilt by owner James Brady. He reported that, even in the severe drought of 1983, the spring continued to flow abundantly (James Brady 1983: personal communication). Ardery (1934) also reported that McConnell died in 1823 and was buried in a family cemetery on the farm. This cemetery has not been relocated.
This site was apparently not fortified and probably served as a stopping
place rather than for defensive protection. Virtually no pioneer accounts
were located which provided any more than passing mention of the site.
In a case between Lanier vs. Protzman (Ardery 1939), William McDowell deposed
that he lived at McConnell's Station about four miles from Paris around
1789-1790. McDowell's land connected to McConnell on the south side of
his 1000-acre tract.

WILLIAM McConnell [2]
The following sketch of William McConnell and his home was written by Mrs. William Breckenridge Ardery and published in the Kentuckian Citizen Wednesday, May 23, 1934.
In the year 1788 William McConnell, Revolutionary soldier, purchased from one James Buchannon 1,000 acres of land on the Paris-Lexington Road. This tract was bounded by lands of James Kelley, Aaron Ashbrook, Hugh Sidwell, James Buchannon and by Captain James Wright's Military survey. Here, William McConnell built his home of native rock four miles from Paris on the west side of the road immediately across from "Roccliegan," the present home of his great-great-grandson, William Breckenridge Ardery, on land now owned by his great-grandson, Lafayette Ardery. The old home was destroyed by fire many years ago, but the spring-house still stands at the foot of the hill and supplies abundant water for all who come for refreshment. This home is indicated on the first map of Bourbon county under the name of LaFayette Ardery, and an interesting sketch showing the style of architecture is in the possession of descendants. It was here that early stage-coaches stopped to change horses enroute from Maysville (Limestone) to Lexington at an early date.
William McConnell, who had rendered service both in assisting in establishing Royal Spring (Georgetown, Ky.), the first fortified station north of the Kentucky River, in company with his cousin, William McConnell, of Fayette county, and had returned to Pennsylvania to fight with the Lancaster county militia during the Revolution, was an outstanding citizen of Bourbon county. For many years he was commissioned by the Bourbon County Court to have jurisdiction over the Bourbon County section of the Paris-Lexington road. He was Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church of Paris, Kentucky, which statement is recorded in the first Minute Book of the Church.
William McConnell, son of Alexander McConnell, who came to America from Scotland, was born in 1753 and married Rosannah Kennedy in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1768. He died in Bourbon County in 1823, his will being a matter of record. In his will he left his "Mansion House"' to his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Ardery and her husband, John Ardery, and it was from this ancestress that some of the land has descended unto the fifth generation. William McConnell and six of his sons fought in the War of 1812.
The children of William McConnell and Rosannah Kennedy, his wife, marriage: 1768 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania:
Mary married Joseph Mitchell
Ann married John Corry
Martha married Wm. Dinwiddie
Samuel married Elizabeth Nesbit
John married Elizabeth Clarkson
William Jr. married Catherine Turley
Edward married Rebecca Todd
Joseph married Jane Jackson
Ephraim married Catherine Ardery
James died unmarried
Elizabeth married John Ardery
Elizabeth McConnell, above mentioned, was born 1785 and died 1833, married January first 1818 to John Ardery who was born 1790 and died 1853. John Ardery was the son of John Ardery and Mary (Watt) Ardery, the former a Revolutionary soldier who came to Bourbon county in 1787 with his brothers, James and William, from Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. James Ardery was one of the original trustees of Carlisle, Kentucky, and William Ardery was the first sheriff of Harrison county. John and James Ardery were both officers in the war of 1812. John Ardery died in Bourbon county in the year 1830.
Among the children of John Ardery and his wife, Elizabeth (McConnell) Ardery was Lafayette Ardery who married Ann Breckenridge,, daughter of John and Ann Weir (Brooks) Breckenridge, both of whom descended from Revolutionary and Colonial ancestry. Ann Breckenridge was a cousin of General John Cabell Breckenridge, Vice President of the United States.
The McConnells and Arderys lie buried in the old family graveyard on the original tract of land, four miles front Paris on the Paris-Lexington Road.
William McConnell was a Trustee of the Presbyterian Church in 1795 and was one of the Trustees to receive the deed front Lawrence Protzman in 1795 to the lot on High Street where the first building of the Presbyterian Church was erected. Mr. McConnell was a Ruling Elder in the Paris Church for many years serving in that office until his death.

"Forks of Elkhorn Church" by Emma Darnell. Kentucky History Center should have a copy. According to this book, Anthony Lindsay came to Kentucky in 1784 and settled in Scott County. There is a historic marker at Stamping Ground, Kentucky, marking the location of Lindsay's Station."
"Anthony Lindsay filed a claim for pension with the United States govenment and stated he was a soldier of the American Revolution.
Anthony Lindsay (1736-1808) brought his family to Kentucky in 1784 and settled in the vicinity of Hayden's Station. In 1799, he sold to his son, Elisha, the farm which was owned in recent years by Marcus H.Cromwell. Some records say that he came from Maryland, and others, from Virginia, but the marriages of two of his daughters indicate that he may have lived for a time in each place. In 1758, he married Rachel (Nellie) Dorsey, daughter of Nicholas and Sarah Griffith Dorsey.
Anthony Lindsay served with George Washington at the time Washington and Braddock marched against the French and Indians at Fort Duquensein July 1755. Lindsay, in bearing dispatches to Gov. Dinwiddle ofVirginia, stopped at the home of Nicholas Dorsey, a large landowner inMaryland where he met and fell in love with Rachel, Dorsey's daughter.
Anthony Lindsay, son of Anthony Lindsay and Alice Page, was born about 1736 in Prince Georges County, Maryland. Anthony died in 1807 at Lindsay's Station in Scott County, Kentucky, and was buried in the old cemetery located near the old fort he had founded. He married Rachel Ann Dorsey about 1756 in Eldersburg, Carroll County, Maryland. She was born about 1737 in Baltimore County, Maryland, the daughter of Nicholas Dorsey and Sarah Griffith. She died in 1805 in Lindsay's Station, Scott County, Kentucky and is buried beside her husband. The Kentucky Historical Society placed a Bronze Plaque marking the site of Lindsay's Stations reading, "Lindsay's grave is 100 yards north". The site where Lindsay's Station stood is located about three miles north of Stamping Ground, Scott County, Kentucky. Anthony Lindsay was a veteran of the French and Indian War, a patriot of the American Revolutionary War, and a pioneer settler of Kentucky.
EVENTS LEADING TO THE FRENCH & INDIAN WAR
The arrival of Celoron de Bienville, with his lead plates, sent a chill over the scattered mountain settlements. The Ohio Company began to shore up their own claim to the region. They built a stone storehouse at the confluence of Wils Creek and the Potomac River. They hired Thomas Cresap to mark and clear a road from this storehouse, across the mountains, to the Ohio Valley. For a while longer, nothing happened. Then, in 1753, the French came back and began to build forts in the valley. The governor of Virginia sent George Washington to warn them off. Washington was in his teens, a Virgina militia officer, and was surveying Lord Fairfax's lands.
The French snubbed the Virginia ultimatum and pressed on to the Forks of the Ohio. They found a frail Virginia fort there and proceeded to take it, where they heard that Virginia had fielded a military unit.
This small army was under the command of George Washington with orders to drive the French out of the valley. The French sent an expedition out to combat this; however, the Virginians found them first.Washington's little army attacked; thus, starting the French and Indian War.
They defeated the French in this initial battle. Anthony Lindsay, age 18, is said to have been the dispatch bearer with Washington's army.He is reported to have been the messenger dispatched by Washington to Governor Dinwiddie relaying news of this French defeat.
One can speculate that it was during this journey that Anthony Lindsay first stayed in the home of Nicholas Dorsey at Eldersburg, in Baltimore county. Possibly, this was not his first contact with the Dorsey family; but, it certainly wouldn't be the last.
This was a short-lived victory. Within weeks, Washington's forces were corned in a makeshift fort called, Fort Necessity, and were forced to surrender.
By then England was aroused to the danger of French expansion in North America. They planned a campaign to expel the French from the Ohio.
GENERAL BRADDOCK
Two regiments of regulars under Major General Edward Braddock arrived in Virginia in February 1765. A few months later, he planned acampaign to cross the mountains and attach Fort Duquesne, a Frenchfort, erected on the ruins of Fort Necessity. The force, when finally assembled, consisted of 1400 regulars and about 600 other troops. These included independent troops from New York, six companies of rangers - one from Maryland - and thirty seamen from the fleet, to serve as artillery soldiers. On 30 May 1755, they set out.Forty-seven days later, on July 15, word reached Annapolis that the expedition was a disaster.
Througout the rest of 1755 and on into the following years, raid after raid struck isolated and outlying settlements. Cabins were burned, cattle slaughtered, men tomahawked, women and children slain orcarried off. Settlers fled from their homes in droves. The MarylandGazette 4 March 1756 reported, "Our accounts from the westward aretruly alarming. All the slaughters, scalpins, burnings and every other barbarity and mischief that the mongrel French, Indians, and their chieftain, the Devil, can invent are often perpetrated there and approach us nigher and nigher". With Indian war parties threatening, people withdrew from the backcountry altogether. Fort Cumberland was left with a small garrison. The rest of the remaining forces withdrewto a newly erected fort near Hagerstown. This fort was named Fort Frederick; but, should not be confused with the settlement named Frederick. That settlement was several miles back east.
A SECOND TOUR FOR ANTHONY
Forbes had 1700 regulars, mostly Highlanders, plus 2700 Pensylvanians, 1000 Virginians (in two regiments, one commanded by Colonel George Washington), and 300 Marylanders. Anthony Lindsay, once again, served in this British effort.
FRENCH & INDIAN WAR ENDS
10 February 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the French & Indian War. France ceded, to Great Britain, Canada and all her territory east of the Mississippi except Isle d'Orleans. Spain ceded Florida to Great Britain, who restored Cuba and the Philippines to Spain. In November of 1762, King Louis XV of France had secretly ceded Louisiana west of the Mississippi, plus the Isle d'Orleans to his "dear and beloved cousin", king of Spain.
On 13 August 1767, Anthony and Rachel Ann Dorsey Lindsay bought adjoining property from Rachel's brother, Charles Dorsey. This indicates they prospered at farming.
ANTHONY LINDSAY MOVES FAMILY
Early in the spring of 1773, Anthony and Rachel Lindsay sold their farm and moved westward into the Southern part of Frederick county. They continued to farm in the area that is now Montgomery County.
ELKHORN REGION OF FINCASTLE COUNTY (KENTUCKY) EXPLORED
News of the new fertile ground of Kentucky swept over Frederick county like wildfire. Still filled with adventure, the 39-year-old AnthonyLindsay, along with other Marylanders, in the spring of 1775, joined aparty led by Charles LeCompte. He left his eldest son, John C.Lindsay, then sixteen years old, to look after the farm and family.Anthony and the others trekked their way over ground they had all travelled during the French and Indian War. They rested at Cresap's Old Town, climbed over the Allegheney Mountains, down the MonongahelaValley, and on to Fort Pitt. Here they joined with a party of Pennsylvanians, led by William McConnell.
At Fort Pitt, they built canoes, a flatboat for their horses, gathered supplies of food and gunpowder. They made their way down the Ohio River, camping on the south bank each night. They were all cautious men and well aware the Shawnees watched their progress.
They made camp at the confluence of the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers. This was where the present city of Carrollton in Carroll County,Kentucky, now stands. Each day they fanned out to explore the new territory on both sides fo the Kentucky River. They moved on down that river to the mouth of the Elkhorn River. Again they set up camp and explored both banks of that river, before moving on down to the forks of the Elkhorn.
They moved their camp to the forks and spent weeks exploring the land drained by both branches of that stream. They liked what they saw. William McConnell was a surveyor and staked all their claims. The next few weeks was spent building cabins as improvements. William McConnell and a few others remained. LeCompte led the others back up the Ohio to Cox's Fort by canoe. After a brief stay at this fort, they made their way to Fort Pitt. The party divided, each returning to their respective homes. No doubt, while at the Forks of the Elkhorn, Anthony Lindsay made up his mind to bring the family there as quickly as possible.
ON THE BRINK OF WAR
Upon his return to Frederick county, Anthony Lindsay learned that the colonists were on the brink of war with the mother country. He found that Maryland had already set up a provisional government and blood had already been shed near Boston. The colonists had declared independence. Armies were being raised. Actualy, Maryland was one of the earliest colonies into the field. Part of the quota of troops requested of her by Congress was two rifle companies. These were to be raised in the backcountry.
ANTHONY LINDSAY'S SERVICE IN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
In the later part of 1776, there were numerous Indian threats to the extreme western settlements of Maryland and northern Virginia. On 17 January 1777, Anthony Lindsay was appointed a Second Lieutenant in theLinganon Battalion of Frederick county.
Anthony and Rachel Ann Dorsey Lindsay were still living in Frederick county in 1778 when Anthony took the Oath of Fidelity. All that winter, the Lindsay, Dowden, and Quisenberry families made preparations to move to the Forks of the Elkhorn region. They had heard of George Rogers Clark's capture of the forts at Kaskaskia and Vincennes. It would now be safe to travel.
In the late spring of 1779, after Anthony's oldest child, Kate Lindsay, married her first cousin, John Lindsay, the wagon train rolled west. Charles LeCompte would lead the way. Kate, and possibly Charles Lindsay, were Anthony's only children to remain in Maryland.
They went through Old Town, then crossed the Mason-Dixon Line into Westmoreland county. The area within which they lived is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
The next year all the families moved westward into an area that both Virginia and Pennsylvania claimed jurisdiction. This section is located within the present panhandle of West Virginia. The Cox families had two forts in the area. One was above Buffalo Creek and the other, below the same Creek. No sooner than they arrived, the Indians became troublesome on the frontier. The wagon train had to retreat back to the safety of forts in Westmoreland county. They would have to remain here until the Indians eased their attacks. This would be another year.
In 1783, the Lindsay, Dowden, and Quisenberry families reached the Ohio River. They built flatboats to haul their cattle, horses, and wagons loaded with only the necessities of life. The flatboats were lashed together during the journey to withstand the springtime dangers of the swollen Ohio River. The flatboats were nothing more than rafts made of logs. Each had protective sides six feet high and thick enough to withstand rifle balls. Each of the flatboats had a partial roof over their sterns. This provided protection from the elements.
The men took turns as scouts, along the south bank of the river. On horseback, they kept three or four miles ahead of the boats. These scouts kept a sharp eye for Indians. At the end of each day, they would find a safe place to camp on the south bank of the river. In the course of the day, these scouts would kill enough wild game to feed everybody.
Apparently their trip down the Ohio was uneventful. They reached the Forks of the Elkhorn about late spring of 1783. All that summer they farmed and built cabins on the land they expected to claim.
Because of the Indian threats, Heyden's Station became their haven of safety that first winter. The area where they settled was near theForks of the Elkhorn, mostly along that river's northern branch.Anthony Lindsay's farm lay within the present bounds of Scott and Franklin counties; however, at that time, it was considered to be Fayette county, Virginia. The state of Kentucky was yet to be formed.
Three years earlier, in 1780, the county of Kentucky was divided into three counties, these being Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties. All of them were counties of Virginia. This was the division at thetime Anthony Lindsay brought his family to the Forks of the Elkhorn area. Nelson county was formed in 1785, taken off Jefferson county. In 1785, three more counties were formed: Bourbon was taken off Fayette county, Madison was taken off Lincoln county, and Mercer was taken off Lincoln county. Settlers came down the Ohio to Kentucky in droves.
17 September 1788, Anthony Lindsay signed a petition to further divide Fayette county. Thus, Woodford county was formed from Fayette in May 1789. Anthony Lindsay's farm now lay in Woodford. Mason county was formed the same year, taken from Bourbon county.
GENERAL HARMAR DEFEATED
On October 18, 1790, General Joshia Harmar, in the first of a long series of expeditions to over awe the Ohio Indians, was defeated by them near Fort Wayne. This began five more years of Indian threats to Kentucky and the Northwest. This loss caused great concern to Anthony about the safety of his family. Bryant's Station was too far away. Hewould build his own.
LINDSAY'S FORT
It was here in Woodford county in 1790, that Anthony and Rachel Lindsay built Lindsay's Fort. This fort was a typical two-family station of that day. Located high on a ridge overlooking a broad Buffalo Trace, a twelve-foot high stockade completely enclosed the area between two log block houses. About two hundred feet apart, the houses tood at opposite ends of the stockade, their only doors and windows were in the side of the wall which enclosed the two rows of logs that stood on end, making the stockade.
The two identical blockhouses were two stories high. The top floor overhung the first floors by five feet. This made the fort easy to defend. There were no blind spots for the enemy to scale the stockade wall. There were no windows on the outside walls; however, there were a great many slits used for loopholes.
The first level of each blockhouse, 16' by 25' and 14' high, was devoid of any wooden floor. The bare ground served each one very well. There was a large open fireplace to the east end of each blockhouse. This was used for both heating and cooking. All sorts of pans, kettles, chairs, and muskets hung from its four walls. The walls of the loft, or second floor, were 10 feet longer than the ground floor. It extended five feet over the ground floor on all sides. The floor ofthe loft was covered with rough hewn planks. To reach the loft, you climbed a ladder extended through an opening cut in the floor of the loft. There were many built-in bunks extending from all four walls.
In the middle of the loft was a table and four benches. On the table lay a couple of books and a burning candle, with its flickering flame, made shadows dance off the walls. In additoin the second floor had another loft of its own. This loft covered only half of the overhead space and was used mainly for storage and sleeping.
There were other buildings built along both stockade walls. All these had sloping roofs. Most were used for cattle, horses, and other livestock; however, a few were pressed into service as housing in times of Indian troubles when neighbors took refuge with the Lindsays. This happened frequently the next few years and grew more intense inthe early spring and summer of 1791.
Today this site is designated and marked by the Kentucky Historical Society. The plaque reads as follows:

KENTUCKY BECOMES STATE
1 June 1792, Kentucky became a state. This was soon followed by other county divisions. Scott county was taken off Woodford. This left Lindsay's Station in the new county of Scott. At the same time, Shelby county was taken off Jefferson and adjoined Scott county to the west. All of Anthony's children, except Nicholas Lindsay, lived close by Lindsay's Station. Nicholas had gone across the Ohio River into the Northwest Territory, where he had built a blockhouse and ran a tan yard in the present Dearborn County, Indiana.
In February 1794, the Governor of Canada told a delegation of Indians, gathered at Quebec, that the land in the Northwest Territory belonged to them. He promised, if the Indians would assist them in war, the land would be returned to them when victory was won. This greatly aroused further Indian activity in the Northwest Territory. It even extended raids by the Indians into the state of Kentucky.
On August 20, 1794, General Anthony Wayne, along with a great number of Kentuckians, defeated the Indians in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. This was at the present site of Fort Wayne, Indiana. On August 3,1795, General Anthony Wayne concluded a treaty with the Ohio Indians. This was called the Treaty of Greenville. It ceded large areas of land in the Nothwest Territory to the whites. In 1796, the Public Land Act authorized sale in minimum lots of 640 acres at the price of $2per acre. This could even be bought on credit. May 7, 1800 the Northwest Territory was divided. The western portion became the Indiana Territory. On May 10, 1800, the Public Land Act authorized land sales of 320 acres at $2 per acre, on four year installments. This was sponsored by William Henry Harrison, governor of the IndianaTerritory. On March 1, 1803, Ohio became a state. The next day, France sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States. March 26, 1804, the new Public Land Act lessened the number of acres that could be purchased at $2 an acre to 160. This, too, could be paid for with installments scattered over a four-year period.
RACHEL ANN DORSEY LINDSAY DIES
The exact date is unknown; however, during 1805, Rachel Lindsay died at her home at Lindsay's Station in Scott County, Kentucky. She was 67years old and had endured some of the greatest hardhips known to mankind. She was truly a pioneeer and lies buried, in an unmarked grave, in the old Lindsay's Station cemetery, beside her husband. They had twelve children: Kate, John C, Sally, Nicholas, Charles, Anthony, Rachel, Elizabeth, Vachel, Lydia, Lucy and Elisha

History of Stonermouth Presbyterian Church, Ruddles Mills, KY
According to the Transylvania Presbytery, the Stonermouth Presbyterian
Church at Ruddles Mills was first motioned October, 1786, but it was
one year later that Isaac Ruddle deeded to Stonermouth Presbyterian
Church two acres of land in the forks of Stoner Creek, Hinkson Creek
and the South Licking River for the purpose of building a meeting house
and establishing a cemetery and sale was made for a price of five shillings.
Andrew McClure is believed to have organized the church and he was the
pastor from 1786 to 1793, the date of his death, after which James
Crawford, William Robinson and Robert Marshall served as supplies until
1796. The longest pastorate in the church was that of Reverend Samuel
Rannels, who was ordained over the united congregation of Paris and
Stonermouth which he retained for twenty one years until his death
on March 24, 1817. After the date of Rannels, there was no long
pastorate. Many different ministers supplied the church for short
periods. After the years 1812 to 1839 Stonermouth and Millersburg
constituted one pastorate.
Stonermouth was the oldest Presbyterian Church in Bourbon County and
was one of the important churches in the Presbytery until the separation
into the old school and the new school churches occurred in the year
1841. After that date, neither branch of the church prospered. The
old
school church seems to have had no regular pastor after John T. Hendrick
resigned in 1839.
By an act of the church dated March 12,1872, Willis Collins,
James H.Ardery and John I. Moore were empowered as trustees
to sell all vacant land and the ruins of the church building and to
use
the proceeds of the sale to build a substantial wall around the
cemetery. The remainder of the money was to be invested in county
bonds, and the interest was to be used to keep the wall repaired
and the graveyard cleaned. Today on the outskirts of Ruddles Mills
there is an abandoned God's Acre in which many of the pioneers of
Kentucky are buried dating back to the birth of Davey Crockett.
The following is a list of the names of some of the people of the
people buried there. These names were collected by different
people from 1917 until the present time. Including Mrs Edna Talbott

1850 Oquawba Twp, Henderson Co., IL William Henry Pence and his family
are there, but move by 1860 to join the others in Iowa.
1840 John Pense has a large family, really the family of Gabriel Pense.
In the family is an unusually elderly man John McConnell. This is in Ward
6, Warren County, IL. Henderson County was formed out of Warren county
IL in 1841.
1830 Isaac Pense is the only much older Pense in Bartholemew County,
Indiana. I believe he was the father of Gabriel Pense.
Aug 9, 1827 Nancy McConnell and Gabriel Pence are married in Bartholomew
County, Indiana.
There are no McConnells in the county for the 1830 and 1840 census.
1820 Isaac Pence in Concord Twp, Champaign Co., Ohio. The only Isaac
Pence in the state with a 10-16 year old boy that Matches Gabriel Pence’s
age.
Someone I know, descended from James McConnell at Tyrone Twp, Cumberland Co., PA has in a will that coopers tools were given to a John McConnell. We think this is the John McConnell and his ancestry would be through James.

Watt might be a sister of Mary Watt who married John Ardery, Sr. on
8 May 1780 in Sherman's Valley, Perry (then Cumberland) Co., Pennsylvania.
John & Mary Ardery's son, John Ardery, Jr. married Elizabeth McConnell,
a sister of Samuel McConnell (husband of Elspa & Samuel's daughter,
Elizabeth Nesbit). Also married in Sherman's Valley was Joseph Watts
of Upper Paxton and Isabel Murray on 2 May 1872. Joseph Watts may
be a brother of Elspa Watt. At this point, the parents of Elspa Watt
are unknown.
Samuel Nesbit's children are identified as: Elizabeth who married
Samuel McConnell; Rachel, single; William Nesbit, deceased, who left two
children Samuel and Elizabeth, both under 21 years. (Circuit Court
Records; Ardery vs. Samuel Nesbit's Heirs, Box 695)

Samuel is believed to have come to Kentucky with his brother, William, in 1776 to establish improvements on land. About 1779 he brought his family to Bourbon Co., Kentucky.
Samuel
is listed on the 1787 Tax List for Bourbon Co. Kentucky. He is the
first Nesbit found listed on the Bourbon Co. Tax records by the compiler
of this database. According to numerous sources, Samuel was
supposedly killed by Shawnee Indians in 1787 or 1788. His widow,
Elspie Watt Nesbit was listed on the tax list for 1788. She remarried

In 1784 records
show that Samuel had two land grants issued to him in Virginia; one for
400 acres in 1784 and another for 1000 acres the same year. His brother,
William received the same allotted land grant in the same year. (Note:
These land grants were in the area of Virginia that later became Kentucky.)

Depositions taken February 8, 1819.
To be read in suit in chancery where Humphrey Marshall and others and
formerly Thos. Weathers and wife are complts. and hrs. of Samuel Nesbit
and others are deftds. Deposition of John Byrd states he came to
KY in fall of 1779, settled at Ruddles' Station and remained in Station
until June 1780; that in Feb. 1780, he went from said station in company
with Isaac Ruddle and Wm. Marshall and came to a cabin and remained all
night; that Ruddle had a warrant to lay on some land for the father of
the deponant, and Ruddle said the cabin was Samuel Nesbit's improvement,
and after he returned to the station James Ruddle and others knew of this
improvement.

Jas. McMillan deposeth he came to Boonesborough March, 1776, his brothers,
John and Robert, came to Ky. 1775, he heard Simon
Kenton, John Fleming and Jonathan McMillan and one Cooper speak of
Millers improvement, that Wm. McClelland, Wm. Miller and Samuel
Nesbit had improved about a mile or mile and quarter from Millersburg.
The Kentucky Citizen Clippings of Early Bourbon Families, Vol. 137,
No. 33:
(The article describes the first trip by the Miller and Hinkson companies.)
...These two companies (Miller and Hinkson) were the first know visitors
of the white race to this particular spot of Kentucky.
In the spring of 1776, John Miller, Alexander Pollock, Samuel
Nesbitt, Wm. Steele, Wm. Nesbitt, Wm. Miller and several others returned
to Kentucky, raised crops of corn and made the usual improvements.
These consisted of clearing small tracts, cutting initials on trees and
erecting an improver's cabin, an uncovered enclosure of the rudest sort.
Their seed corn was furnished by John Townsend and John Cooper who had
raised a bit the year before. In May 1779 Virginia passed the celebrated
Land Law under which a preferred right to certain quantities of land was
secured to actual settlers who had become such prior to Jan. 1, 1778, and
to those who might have theretofore and thereafter "made a crop of corn"
or have resided in the country upon the western waters for at least one
year. (The proximity of water courses was the only means of describing
the lands and some which sound like large rivers are dry ditches eleven
months of the year).
Among the hundreds whose lands were secured by this enactment
the six above mentioned men each became entitled to a settlement of one
thousand acres and a pre-emption of four hundred acres adjoining.
It is very difficult for us to realize the very confused conditions
of land titles at the time. In Kentucky some few entries and surveys
had been made under the corporat charters and upon importation rights,
very many more upon treasury warrants for money paid the receiver general,
and many upon military warrants for service in the French and Indian war.
Add to this the very crude method of marking the land by blazing trees
in a country covered with dense forests, and the lack of skill of many
of the earlier surveyors and you have a chaotic condition of overlapping
claims, which caused suits for fifty years in some instances.
Early History of Bourbon County and Paris by Laura Lilleston, 1939 (excerpt)
FIRST COMPANIES
These pathfinders blazed the trail for the settlers of the wilderness.
Many were killed in the undertaking.
The State of Virginia in May, 1779, passed a series of land laws which applied to all the Western Territory, including Kentucky. These new laws controlled the method by which most of the land was taken up. The first act was concerning land to soldiers, sailors and marines. Then followed an act to adjust titles of all who claimed unpatented lands prior to the establishing of Virginia's Land Office. This provided that surveys of unappropriated lands on the Western Waters before 1778 when executed by a commissioned surveyor in furtherance of Treasury Warrants or Military rights were validated. Virginia also recognized and gave rights to those settlers who prior to January 1st, 1778, had made a crop of corn or had resided in the country upon the Western Waters for at least a year, usually 400 acres. If prior to January 1, 1778, settlers had marked out or chosen unappropriated lands, built a cabin or made other improvements, preemption rights were allowed for any reasonable quantity of land not to exceed 1,000 acres. It was because of such inducements these improvers, traveling in companies for safety’s sake, pushed their way into the rich lands of Bourbon (then Fincastle) County. Most of them came by way of the Ohio River from Redstone, which was the most dangerous route into Kentucky.
The majority of these companies became locaters or early settlers and obtained claims for land in their own names in this section of the State.
JOHN HINKSTON'S COMPANY from Westmoreland and adjoining counties in Pennsylvania was the first company to improve on Hinkson's fork of Licking. In March, 1775, these men came down the Ohio and up Licking in canoes. Hinkston (Hinkson) and Townsend Creeks, Cooper's Run, also Martin's and Hinkston's Stations were named for members of this party. . . .
JOSEPH HOUSTON'S COMPANY from Cumberland and Westmoreland counties,
Pennsylvania, was the second company to improve on Hinkson's fork of
Licking. In April, 1775, Joseph Houston, for whom Houston Creek was named,
brought his company down the Ohio River and up Licking, landing at Blue
Licks. Here they met up with Hinkston's company.
. . .
JOHN MILLER'S COMPANY - June, 1776, John Miller, founder of Millersburg,
Bourbon county, brought a company from Cumberland and adjoining counties
in Pennsylvania to the neighborhood of the lots drawn the year before by
Houston's company and visited the old improvements. They brought with them
some corn and potatoes. According to depositions of those in this company
they heard of many outrages committed by the Indians. James
Cooper had been killed, Andrew McConnell's sons had been taken prisoners,
a man was killed near Upper Blue Licks and another at Leesburg and, after
consulting with John Haggin and hearing from him that John Hinkston and
20 of his men had left the country, they concluded to return to Pennsylvania
July, 1776. Before going, however, they visited Boonesborough where they
"found upwards of 30 men." They told these men of provisions they had hidden
in the loft of Miller's cabin and returned to Pennsylvania.

PATRICK LOGAN'S COMPANY-April, 1776, Patrick Logan piloted a company into this section. This party arrived at Blue Licks and traveled the "Middle Trace" and visited the cabins of Hinkston, Cooper and Haggin. They made their headquarters at Hinkston's Station and while there they saw Kenton, Kennedy (a Scotchman) and John Fleming, known as Captain Fleming. Patrick Logan had been one of Houston's company of 1775. . . .
JOHN LYON'S COMPANY-On May 3rd, 1776, a company from Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and nearby counties, known as John Lyon's company, came to John Hinkston's improvement where persons had resided for nearly a year past. William Hoskins conducted them to some rich lands which had been taken up some miles to the east, probably on Houston Creek. . . .
WILLIAM STEELE AND OTHERS-Company from Pennsylvania: In 1780 William
Steele, who was of Houston's and Miller's companies, came to Kentucky from
Pennsylvania with a company "to the amount of thirty-three boats and canoes."
This company started from Wheeling, coming down the Ohio River for Kentucky.
Four boats landed at Limestone (Maysville) and the others went to the falls
of the Ohio (Louisville).
