William MONTAGUE (1º E. Salisbury) b ABT 1303, Cassington, Oxfordshire, England d 30 Jan 1343/44, Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England
Buried: Bisham, Berkshire, England
Notes: Ambassador to the Pope, Baron of Denbigh, Governor of Sherburn and Corffe Castles, Governor of the isles of Guernsey, Jersey, Sark and Alderney, Constable of the Tower of London, and had his crest of an eagle given him by the King. Admiral of the fleet, Earl of Salisbury, Ambassador to the Duke of Bavaria, Appointed Earl Marshall of England for life, King of Man, Member of Parliament, and one of the founders of the Royal Order of Knights of the Garter. This great man married Catherine, dau. of William, lord Grandison, descended out of Burgundy, cousin german to the Emperor of Constantinople, the King of Hungary and Duke of Bavaria. She was a lady of great beauty, and history records that she was as good as she was beautiful. Upon one occasion while attending a feast at Windsor Castle she was dancing with Edward III and lost her garter which the King took up from the floor. Some of the Nobles that stood around were seen to smile, whereupon the King remarked "that the time should shortly come when the greatest honor imaginable should be paid to that Garter". Thus originated the Royal order of the Knights of the Garter with its motto in French "Honi soit que mal y pense".

William MONTAGUE (2° E. Salisbury) b 25 Jun 1328, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England d 3 Jun 1397
Buried: Conventual Church, Bisham, Montague, Somersetshire, England
Notes: Knight of the Garter. BEF he was of age he was Knighted when Edward landed at La Hague. He afterward served at the siege of Can, and at the glorious battle of Crecy. When the Order of the Garter was instituted he was the seventh of its original knights, and was the last survivor of the Founders. When the Black Prince obtained Aquitaine he attended him to France and served under him in all his excursions and expeditions. At the battle of Poitiers he commanded the rear of the English army, and was highly instrumental in gaining that famous victory. In short, almost his whole life was a perpetual campaign under Edward III and his son, the Black Prince. In the wars of his time he was chiefly distinguished in naval actions. In the succeeding reign, he was continued in all his posts and preferments, and also made governor of Calais, whence he harrassed the French with continual excursions. In the fifth of that reign he convoyed to England the King's intended Consort, daughter of Charles, King of the Romans, and in the seventh and eighth he served against the Scots. In the ninth, a grant was made to him during life, of the custody of the Isle of Wight and Castle of Carisbrook. In the twentieth, the year 1397, he departed this life, having ordered by his will, that every day until his corpse should be Buried at Bisham, distribution should be made of one pound five shillings to three hundred poor people; likewise that twenty poor men should bear torches on the day of his funeral, each torch eight pounds weight, and each of them wearing a gown of black cloth with a red hood; also, that there should be nine wax lights ABT his corpse, and upon every pillar of the church there should be fixed banners of his arms; moreover that £3 should be given to the religious, to sing "rentals and pray for his soul". He first married Joan, who by way of distinction was called Fair Maid of Kent, daughter to Edmund Plantagenet, Earl of Kent, but having been separated from her upon a petition from Sir Thomas Holland to the Pope Clement VI, in which he alleged that she had been pre-contracted to him, his lordship married second, Elizabeth, dau. and co-heir of John, Lord Mohun, one of the original Knights of the Garter. She was sister of Phillippa De Mohun who married Edward Plantagenet, 2d Duke of York, son of Edmund of Langley, 5th son of Edward III. The Lady Mohun, mother of the above Elizabeth, obtained from her husband so much good ground for the common, or park, of the town of Dunstor, as she could in one day compass about, going on her naked feet.

Buried: 4 Mar 1389/90, Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
Notes: had summons to Parliament from the 31st of Edward to the 13th year of Richard II, when he died. He had three sons, John his heir (who became 3d Earl of Salisbury), Thomas Montague, and Richard Montague, of whose issue there is no trace. This Richard lived ABT the year 1400. None of the English genealogies make any further mention of him except to state his name. It is claimed that there was also a fourth son, whose name was Simon Montague, and from 'in the nobility of England of this name claim descent'. Collins' Peerage, however, states that there is no evidence that this Simon ever lived, and is inclined to the belief that the nobility are descended from James Montague, a natural son of Thomas, 4th Earl of Salisbury. This James Montague had large possessions in County Kent, where he was a man of distinction, and is buried in the Church of Ludsdown in Kent.

Chief Commissioner of array in Herts, 1385. Keeper of Trowbridge Castle, and commissioner to treat of peace with Scotland, in Mar 1398/9. In May he accompanied Richard to Ireland; but he was sent back, in advance of the King, to raise forces with which to meet the invading Hereford. Later they joined company in England. This Earl of Salisbury was the only temporal Nobleman, who remained firm to King Richard's interest AFT the invasion of the Duke of Lancaster. With the other Lords Appellant of 1397, he was committed to the Tower 20 Oct 1399; on the 29th in Parl. he was challenged by Lord Morley upon his defence and accepted the challenge, and the matter was referred to the Constable and Marshal. He joined the conspiracy of the Earls of Kent and Huntingdon to murder Henry IV and his sons at Windsor, at a Christmas mumming; but the King was warned and the conspirators marched across England proclaiming that King Richard was alive. At Cirencester the people rose against them, and beheaded the Earls of Kent and Salisbury, 5 Jan 1399/1400. He was attained of treason in Parl. Mar 1400/1; but this judgement was reversed in 1461. He married, before 4 May 1383, Maud, relict of John, son of Andrew Aubrey (d. 1380/1), widow (having been 2nd wife) of Sir Alan Buxhall of Sussex, Dorset and Staffs (d. 2 Nov 1381), and daughter of Adam Francis, Mayor of London, 1352-54, M.P. for London in 7 Parl., 1352-69, by Agnes, daughter and coheir of William Champnes' [Visitation of Kent, Harl. m Agnes (Knotting) SNELLING ABT 1459, Hemington, Northamptonshire, England

Thomas MONTAGUE of Hemington Mo16 d 1516
Notes: the parentage of this Thomas is not proved, though a fabulous descent from Simon, stated to have been the brother of John Montagu, 3rd Earl of Salisbury, is generally attributed to him. It is stated (1812) by Sir Egerton Brydges, in Collins, vol. ii, p. 42, "that the late Mr. Thorpe (and it seems Mr. Anstis concurred in this opinion) suspected this family to be descended from James Montagu, a natural son of Thomas the [4th and] last Earl of Salisbury". This James is buried in the church of Ludsdowne in Kent, of which place he derived the manor from his father. See Thorpe's Custumale Roffense, p. 125. The bordure round the arms of the present family favours the idea. Other sources states that they descended from Richard Montagu alias Ladde, a yeoman or husbandman, living in 1471 at Hanging Houghton, Northamptonshire, where the Laddes had been tenants since the fourteenth century. The explanation of a fifteenth century yeoman's Norman name might sometimes be female descent from a knightly house through a coheir. Alias names, in some respect the forerunners of modern compound (or double-barreled) name, were common in the Middle Ages. In the earliest times, when surnames were new, an alias may just mean indecision between equally attractive alternatives. Later they sometimes indicate bastardy (one name perhaps being the father's and one the mother's), but in most cases probably mark inheritance through an heiress whose name was thus perpetuated. A good case has been made out for the possibility that the Ladde alias came from a division among coheirs about 1420 of the remaining small inheritance of a line of Montagus at Spratton and Little Creton, also in Northamptonshire. This line was of knightly origin and probably a branch of the baronial Montagus (Earls of Salisbury from 1337), whose almost certain ancestor Dru De Montagud was a tenant-in-chief in 1086. Other yeoman Montagus are found in Buckinghamshire from 1354 when Roger Montagu appears as a witness to a quitclaim of land in Great Kimble, notably in Halton where a family of Montagu alias Elot held land from about 1440 to 1610. A line of Montagus found in Waddesdon from about 1540 may have branched from these. These in the eighteenth century were shepherds and drovers and one set up in Aylesbury as a wheelwright and another as a tailor. Another line, also possibly branched from Halton, is found at Boveney and Dorney in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This produced Richard Montagu, Bishop of Chichester (1628-38) and Norwich (1638-41), and Peter Montagu, who settled in Virginia.' (Wagner). A franklin was the original name for a free tenant. In England, franklins came to be called yeomen. Sources: English Genealogy, Anthony Wagner.
