Nicholas Meriwether arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, probably about 1652. The first confirmation of his existence in Virginia was 4 July 1653 when he patented 300 acres of land in Lancaster County. From at least 13 Oct 1653 until 13 Dec 1656, Nicholas served as a clerk of the Quarter Court and Governor’s Council for the Colony in Jamestown. Although many researchers state he was clerk of Surry County, there is no evidence that he was. About 1661, he bought “The Island House” from Elizabeth Kingsmill & her husband Nathaniel Bacon, a relative of the Bacon who started “Bacon’s Rebellion”; a marker on Jamestown Island identifies the “Island House” location today.

14,  Abigail Burwell, nee Smith, was the heiress of Col. Nathaniel Bacon, and
the arms on her tomb are Burwell impaling Bacon.  The crest is a human bust,
representing, probably, Smith.  Meade says that Mrs. Elizabeth Bacon was daughter
of Richard Kingsmill, and her tombstone at Norfolk is confirmatory, bearing as it
does the arms of Tayloe (her first husband was William Tayloe, of the Council)
    impaling Kingsmill, as in Burke.

In 1675, his son, Peter Ware, Jr., sells land in Queen’s Creek, Hampton Parish, York Co., VA.  to Nathaniel Bacon in which he identifies the land as having belonged to his father Peter Ware "long since deceased",  (Dow 4 217, Williamsburg Historical Research Center).  Honorable Nathaniel Bacon married Elizabeth Kingsmill Taylor, widow of Col. William Taylor (Tayloe) of King's Creek, York Co., which was located on the York River a short distance from Queen's Creek.  Mary Hickes is identified in a 1659 Orphan’s Court document as the widow of Peter Ware.  This document also identifies that two or more of their children died prior to 1659, as she was requesting the court to divide cattle willed to them by their father among the surviving children, (Virginia State Library Archives, York Co. Virginia Records 1659-1662).
