TCP Salisbury starts this family with the following Edward and reports that, whilst some sources say he was son of Walter 'le Ewrus', Earl of Rosmar, that Walter was actually "a fictitious person" and Edward's parentage is unknown. TCP reports: "The nickname "le Ewrus" = l'heureux, or the fortunate was converted into "de Evreux" by later writers, with the result that the family has been given the name Devereux and has been tacked on to the Norman Counts of Evreux." But the father of the Humphrey de Bohun below was a close neighbor of the d'Evereux family in Normandy before 1066, so there is a certain probability of the connection. | |||||||||||||||
