As daughter of the powerful Robert "King" Carter (Ct9)
and
Judith Armistead (Ar9) and by virtue of her fortuitous first marriage, Elizabeth Carter became the matron
of the senior branches of the Burwell family and helped her three children by her
second intelligent though impoverished husband to fame and fortune. It is difficult to count
the numerous high ranking officers and public officials among her descendants and far more difficult
still to count all the officers, officials, gentry, nobles and even kings and queens among her ancestors.
The intermarriages of these families among themselves and with other influencial colonial
families is as difficult as it is amazing to trace in its full scope; for these intermarriages span 1000 years and more.
Here we have to do with people of multiple descent from "Ganga" Hrolf, first Duke of Normandy, and each of many of his compnaions
and hence descendants of William the Conqueror and his companions and furthermore of the Plantagenets and the Magna Carta Barons
who forged the rule of law out of the feudal oath of mutual fidelity between monarch and vassal by fearlessly holding the monarch
to his word, often costing many their lives and fortunes, only to have their falling standards snatched up by others
and borne forwards into the heat of this never ending battle.
Of course, Elizabeth Carter enjoyed relatively peaceful times being born in Corotoman Va in 1688, far from the wars in Britain and on the European continent and after the major battles with the Powhatan Indian were over and the surviving descendants of Pocahontas and other matriarchs had been integrated into leading Virginia families. The colonists had mostly sought and maintained peaceful co-existance with the Powhatans, as did the latter with the colonists. But there were tricksters and greedy land-grabbers among the colonists and naíve Indians, who did not understand bargaining and believed a ware should have intrinsic absolute value and became enraged when they discovered another Indian had gotten a much better price for his furs, corn or tobacco and later went to get the full value - alas often ending in massakers.
Elizabeth married first Nathaniel Burwell, son of Lewis Burwell (possibly of the Burrell 1 family)
and Abigail Smith (Ba11-2-6-1), a family of the very ancient Bacon descent.
Second, some time after 1721, to Dr.
George Nicholas Ni8, a family with branches of prominence among the Royalists or respectively the Republicans in the period between 1639 and 1670)
She died after January 1730

Elizabeth Carter (Burwell) (Ca8-2) lived at one time at Carter's Grove,
on the James River. The house is now owned by a family not related to the
original owners, and has been restored or remodeled by the addition of
a third floor, not there originally, but which architects say should have
been. The grounds have been beautifully landscaped, according to Dr. Swem
of Williamsburg, Virginia.
She was at Roswell - the Mann Page home - with Dr. George Nicholas when he was the attending physician, January 24, 1730.

The first husband of Elizabeth Carter, Nathaniel Burwell was born in
1680 and died in 1721. This fixes the date of her marriage to Dr. George
Nicholas (Ni8) as sometime after 1721.
Robert Carter Nicholas her eldest child by her second husband, Dr. George Nicholas (Ni8) is recorded on page (Ni7) He married Anne Cary (Ca7). John Nicholas married Elizabeth Fry. (Ni3-5) had no history of the other son George.
