Colonel John Carter was (possibly the son of William Carter
(Ct11) and Marie Mary Anscell An11Married: first Jane Glyn daughter of Morgan Glyn (records show
alternate birth- and marriage place Fulham or Newgate Christ Church in
Middlesex, Engl. or Norfolk, Nansemond, Va. The former two are likely the
place of birth and then christening sometime between 1620 and 1624, the
latter the place of marriage sometime between 1637 and 1647. For John seems
to have come from Middlesex and already been in Virginia by 1635, as he
was already a Burgess in 1641. He may have known the Glynns before coming
to America and they may have come at about the same time or later by invitation
and had 3 children.

| Colonel John Carter, the immigrant from England, was in
the House of Burgesses.. Upper Norfolk County, 1641 to 1648. He was a member
of the Counci1, 1657 - 1658, and was Commander-in- Chief of Lancaster County,
Virginia (from the Colonial Dames, Kentucky Register). In 1656, Mar
10, the colony of Virginia extended the suffrage to all free men
regardless of their religion (HN, 3/10/99). This followed only a
few years after the Act of Toleration in Maryland, where there had been
a minor civil war leading up to it, when the Catholics (who had immigrated
under the Charter granted to Lord Baltimore to found a colony in Maryland,
which had priorly been part of the grant to Virginia) had tried to drive
out the Protestant Virginia settlers already in Maryland (which probably
included Nathaniel Pope Po11.
Col. John Carter and other members of the Council must have observed that
religious toleration restored peace rather quickly and decided to follow
suit. Life in the colonies was already too difficult just building up the
infra-structure and getting artisans to produce the necessities of life
and coming to terms with the Indians to be able to afford the "luxury"
of religious wars born out of the need for monarchs for thought-control
via the clergy. Any attempt at such religious alchemy as proceeded in all
of Europe between 1618 and 1690 would have made it easy for the Indians
to drive all (surviving) Caucasians and Afro-Americans into the sea - and
they jolly well should have, had the colonist decided to continue* importing
such absurd ideas on theocracies (A house divided amonst itself cannot
stand).
John Carter, the immigrant, made several voyages to Virginia before establishing himself there permanently between May 1638 and January 1641. Apparently he brought with him useful political connections and considerable money for he soon was chosen burgess for Nansemond River in Upper Norfolk County. But his attention was further north; he acquired land by patent and purchase in what was then Charles River County (to become Lancaster in 1751). Although he appears first in the Lancaster County records in January 1652, he had apparently not yet "seated" his land and had to obtain that April an act of the Assembly for an extension; he moved there soon afterwards. Through his connections and his wealth, John Carter rose quickly to prominence in the colony, and by 1657 he was a member of the council. His five marriages produced only six children, several of whom died in infancy. Most important to Robert was his older half-brother, John, who raised him after their father died in 1669. John Carter I followed the custom of the time in bequeathing most of his property to his eldest son, but he made provision for Robert, leaving him 1,000 acres on a branch of Corotoman, one-third of his personal estate, "his mother's hoop ring amp; christall necklace," and a sixth part of his books. Most important for Robert were the specific instructions that his father wrote concerning his education. Robert was to have a tutor who would teach him both English and Latin. |
