(Ni6-8) Philip Norborne Nicholas (1775 – 1849) called  after Norborne, Lord Botetourt, his father’s friend, who besides other offices, held that of  judge of the General Court.
One of the daughters of Colonel Nicholas married Mr. Edmund Randolph (Randolph family).. Another married Mr. John H. Norton, of Winchester.. She was the mother of the Reverend Mr. Norton, a venerable minister of the Episcopal Church of New York, who had two sons in the Episcopalian ministry, one in Virginia and one in Kentucky.

The children of Robert Carter Nicholas were blessed with a mother who was equally worthy.
Let the following letter to her son, Wilson Cary Nicholas, on his entering public life, bear witness:

I congratulate you on the honor your country has  done you in choosing you their representative with so large a vote. I hope you are come into the Assemb1y without those trammels which some people submit to wear for a seat in the House - I mean, unbound by promises, to perform this or that job which the many headed monster may think proper to chalk out for you; especially that you have not engaged to lend at least hand  to pull down the Church, which, by some 1mpertinerit questions in the last paper, I suspect will be attempted. Never, my dear Wilson, let me hear that by that sacrilegious act you have furnished yourself  with materials to erects scaffold by which you may climb to the sum¬mit of popularity; rather remain in the lowest obscurity; though, I think, from long observation, can venture to assert that the man of integrity, who one equal tenor in his conduct -who defiates neither to the one side or the other from the proper line - has more of the confidence of the people than the very compliant time-server who is the s1ave of the people. I flatter myself, too, you wi11 act on a more liberal. plan, than some members have done in matters in which the honor and interest of this state are concerned;  that you will not, to save a few pence to your constituents, discourage the progress of arts
Sciences nor pay with so scanty a hand. persons who are eminent in either. This parsimonious plan., of late adopted, will throw us behind the other states in all valuable improvements, and chill, like a frost, the spring of learning and spirit of enterprise. I have insensibly extended what I had  to say beyond my first design, but will not quit the subject without giving you a hint, from a very good friend of yours, that your weight in the House will be much greater if you not take up the attention of the Assembly on trifling matters, nor too often demand a hearing. To this I must add a  hint of my own, that temper and decorum is of infinite advantage to a public
Speaker, and a modest diffidence to a young man just entering the stage of life.  The neglect of the former throws him off his guard, breaks his chain of reasoning, and has often produced in England duals that have terminated fatally.
The natural effect of the latter will ever be procuring a favorable and patient hearing, and all those advantages that a prepossession in favor of the speaker produces.
You see, my son, that I take the privilege of a mother in advising you, and be assured, you have no friend so so1icitous for your we1fare, temporal and eternal, as your ever affectionate mother.

Colonel Miles Cary (Ca10)
Born 1620, Bristol, England
- He emigrated to Virginia about 1645, and settled at Magpie Swamp, Warwick County, Virginia. He was Justice of Warwick, 1652. He was Collector of Customs on the James River. He was Royal Naval Officer, having superintendence of building Fort Monroe.
He was a Member of the Council in 1665. He was Eschestor (or Exchequer) General of Virginia, 1665. He was Burgess in 1659.

On his tomb an inscription gives, names of his father, mother, and maternal grandfather. The coat of arms of the Cary family of Devonshire is carved on this tombstone.

The arms: Argent on abend sable; three vases argent, with a silver swan for their crest.

His tomb is at Cary's Quarter, at the intersection of the James and Warwick Rivers.

Colonel Cary (Ca10.9) married Anne (Ta10.10) daughter of Thomas Taylor of Bristol.

He died 1667, June 10th from wounds received in the attack by the Dutch Fleet upon Old Point Comfort, where he had been ordered to build a fort (Monroe) in 1665.

He left a will, and directed sale of two houses in Baldwin and St. Nicholas Streets for benefit of his three daughters, Anne, Bridgett and Elizabeth when married.

The inscription on the tomb of Colonel Miles Cary (Ca10): "Here lyeth ye body of Miles Cary Esquire, only son of John Cary alld Alice, his wife, daughter of Henry Robson of ye city of Bristol, Alderman.

He was born in ye City. and departed this life ye 10th day of June 1667. about the forty seventh year of his age, leaving four sons, and three daughters, namely, Thomas, Anne, Henry, Bridgett, Elizabeth, Miles and William."

Born 1655, October 27, in Virginia.

He was educated in England under the direction of his uncle. He was Clerk of the General Court. 1692-3. He was a Burgess and Chairman of important Committees from 1693 - 1699. He was a prominent member of the Committee to revise laws of the original trustees of William and Mary in 1693. He was Register of the Court of Admiralty. He was Naval Officer on York River. He was Surveyor General of Virginia (1692-1708). He was one of the gentlemen summoned to repel a fleet of pirates on Chesapeake Bay, April 28, 1700.

Married - (first) Mary, daughter of Thomas Milner.  No issue.
 (second) 1702, April 13, Mary (9.6) widow of Colonel William Roscow of Blunt Point, Warwick County, daughter and heiress of Colonel William Wilson (Wi10) of Hampton, Elizabeth City County.
Died 1708, February 17, and was buried at Richneck,  Warwick County.

 The inscription on the grave stone of Mary, his first wife, at Richneck, Warwick County:¬  “Here lyeth ye body of Mary, the wife of  Miles Cary and daughter of Thomas Milner and Mary his wife, late of Nausemond County, deceased. She was born of the 6th of August 1667 and died 27th of October, 1700 in the 34th year of her age, issueless.

Also, ye body of Colonel Miles Cary, husband of the said Mary, who died February 17, 1708, and left two sons, Wilson and Miles, and two daughters, Mary and Anne, by Mary, ye daughter of Colonel William Wilson of Hampton (Elizabeth City County).”

In the Clerk's office at Hampton, foul' miles from Ceeley' s, are wills of Colonel Wilson Cary (Ca8) and his brother Miles Cary (Ca8-) sons of Colonel Miles Cary (Ca9) and Mary Wilson (Wi9) (Roscow) Cary, Archibald (Blair).

The estate of 2,000 acres runs along the river adjoining present Newport News. Scarcely a vestige of the old mansion remains.

Miles Cary (Ca 8-) willed Ceeley's to his brother, Colonel Wilson Cary (Ca8) of Richmond, who married Sarah (Pate?)

on 11 Jan 1741 at age 65. She was buried at Blunt Point, Warwick Co.,

14.  Col. Wilson Cary (Miles6, Miles5, John4, William3, Richard2,
William1); b. 1702; m. Sarah, prob. Pate, daughter of John Pate, by 20 Jan
1728/29; d. 28 Nov 1772 at 'Ceeleys', Elizabeth City Co., VA.
     He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He was an
attorney. He and Sarah Pate resided at 'Ceeleys', Elizabeth City Co.,
VA. He and Sarah Pate resided at 'Rich Neck', Warwick Co., VA. He left
a will on 10 Oct 1772 at Elizabeth City Co., VA; proved 25 Feb 1778.

     Sarah Pate was born circa 1710. She died in Sep 1783.
     Known children of Col. Wilson Cary and Sarah Pate were as
follows:

15.  Martha Cary (William6, Miles5, John4, William3, Richard2,
William1); b. 1686; m. Edward Jaquelin, son of John Jaquelin and
Elizabeth Craddock, 1706; 2nd wife; d. 1738.

     Edward Jaquelin was born in 1668 at Kent, England. He married
Rachel; 1st wife, 2nd husband. He resided at Jamestown Island, VA. He
immigrated in 1697 to Virginia. He was a member of the House of
Burgesses from 1712 to 1714 at Virginia. He died on 9 Nov 1739.

16.  Col. William Bassett (William7, Bridget6Cary, Miles5, John4,
William3, Richard2, William1); b. 8 Jul 1709; m. Elizabeth Churchill,
daughter of Col. William Churchill and Elizabeth Armistead, 29 Jan
1729; 1st husband; d. 1744?.
     He resided at 'Eltham', New Kent Co., VA. He was a member of the
House of Burgesses between 1743 and 1744 at Virginia.

     Elizabeth Churchill was born circa 1709. She resided at 'Eltham',
New Kent Co., VA. She died on 16 Apr 1779 at 'Eltham', New Kent Co.,
VA.
     Known children of Col. William Bassett and Elizabeth Churchill
include:
                 i. Elizabeth Bassett; b. 13 Dec 1730; m. Gov.
                    Benjamin Harrison V, son of Col. Benjamin Harrison
                    IV and Anne Carter.

William1); b. 1733; m. Edward Ambler, son of Richard Ambler and
Elizabeth Jaquelin, 1754; d. 1781.

     Edward Ambler was born in 1733. He resided at Jamestown, VA. He
died on 30 Oct 1767 or 30 Oct 1768.

18.  Ann Cary (Wilson7, Miles6, Miles5, John4, William3, Richard2,
William1); b. 1735; m. Robert Carter Nicholas, son of Dr. George
Nicholas and Elizabeth Carter, 1751; d. 1786.
     She resided at 'Ceeleys', Elizabeth City Co., VA.

     Robert Carter Nicholas was born "1-28-1728" at Hanover Co., VA.
He was graduated at William and Mary College, Williamsburg, VA. He was
a judge. He was Treasurer of the Colony at Virginia. He died on 8 Sep
1780 at Virginia.
