Born 1325 in St. Giles-in-the-Heath, Devon Married: 1st Alice/Agnes Stafford abt 1345 Somerset, England - no children 2nd about 1349 Jane de Bryen in Devon, England, daughter of Guy de Bryen probably by Ann or Alice Holway. The Bryan Pedigree shows that Guy de Brian/Briene ( d 17.8.1390) m 1st Joan Carew dau of Sir John Carew and 2nd Elizabeth Montacute dau of William Montacute 1st Earl of Salisbury and widow of of Hugh le Despenser, so we must assume either that there was a 3rd marriage to Alice Holway or that her mother was joan or Elizabeth. The spelling of the name was changed to Cary during the reign of Edward
II and has ever since been spelled as Cary (until 1906). Sometime after
that some Carys added an "e" to the name and there have been both Carys
and Careys since.

Castle Cary is situated in Somerset, twelve miles south east of Wells.
There was a former stronghold known to have been fortified in the time
of Saxons. About the year 1125, the Lord William Percival named 'Lovel
the Wolf" erected strong fortifications at Kari from which the name is
taken.
Much of the time during the reign of King Steven (1135-1154) the Barons
were divided into two parties, The Lord Kari being opposed to the King.
He made so much trouble that Stephen turned his whole attention to Castle
Kari and took it. In 1153, it was beseiged again and nearly ruined.
The Manor House stands on the east side of the street and was a stately
edifice.
