Born: 10 Dec 1447, Cowling, Kent, England
Died: 9 Mar 1511/12
Buried: 9 Mar 1511, Colegiate Church, Cobham, Kent, England
Notes: 7th Ld Cobham. Of Weycroft, Devon and Cooling, Kent. There exists reasonably strong evidence of a special relationship between Thomas Phelips and the Brooke-Cobham family, seated at Cooling, Kent. The Brooke family has West Country origins and, if Thomas Phelips (?see Beaumont Be17) had been the administator or surveyor of at least some of the Booke-Cobham estates, his migration from Kent to Somerset is easily explained. Such a relationship would also explain the presence of Brooke estate documents among the Phelips family papers in the Somerset County Record Office. Further, such an influencial connection, could explain his rise in rank from yeoman in 1460 to gentleman by 1466 and his appointment to the office of Escheator from Somerset & Dorset in 1471 and 1478. [Ref.: Ibid, p. 3-4}. Further evidence of a relationship derives from a lease extant in the Kent County Record Office in which John, Lord Cobham leased his manor of Brooke Montacute to "Jane Phillip , widow." [ Ref.: Ibid p. 3, citing Kent County Record Office ref. U601 T202].

Notes: These family relationships are also confirmed in a pedigree on page 16 in Harleian Society's The Visitation of Kent, 1619. The pedigree includes the Cobham coat of arms ('Gules, on a chevron argent a lion rampant sable, ducally crowned or') and shows 'Thomas Brooke, fil 2dus Tho. fil. Joh'is Baronis de Cobham' married to 'Susanna, filia ... Cramner [sic], vidua Glearke'. According to the pedigree, Thomas Brooke and Susan Cramner [sic] had two sons -- 'Cramner [sic] Brooke de Ashford', who married 'Abell filia Joh'is Fogg Militis', and 'Edwardus Brooke'. The pedigree shows no descendants of 'Edwardus Brooke'. However, it shows a son of Cranmer Brooke and his wife Abell Fogg: 'Willielmus Brooke de Hartlipp, Ar. hodiernus escanter comit' Cantii.', who married 'Jana filia et cohaeres Joh'is Tenacre de Boughton subtus de Blene'. They had a daughter 'Maria', with whom the pedigree ends in the year 1619. At the end of the pedigree are the words 'Ex fidei confessione istius W. Brooke', indicating that it was William Brooke, son of Cranmer Brooke, who provided the heralds with the information contained in this pedigree.

The 13th Century Cobham church, dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. In the chancel, which is the oldest part of the church, built in 1220, is in the Early English style of architecture, and houses one of the finest collections of medieval brasses in England. In all there are 19 brasses, of which 11 are complete and full sized examples, dating between 1298 and 1529. Amongst its other features of interest are the 14th century nave and aisles, together with the tower and porch which were added by John de Cobham, who also founded Cobham College, and the alabaster and black marble table tomb dated 1558 with recumbent effigies of George Brooke, Lord Cobham and his wife, Anne Bray. The old College at Cobham was founded and endowed in 1362 as a college for priests. It has had a chequered history, which has included its dissolution in 1539/40 under King Henry VIII, and subsequently lying derelict for over 50 years, until converted into almshouses under the terms of the will of Sir William Brooke, Lord Cobham. The almshouses are still occupied by elderly local people. It is a unique quadrangular building, the outside of which the public can normally view. Cobham Hall, on the east side of the village is one of the finest houses in Kent. There has been a manor house on the site since the 13th Century but the present building is late Elizabethan, with 18th century additions. The interior features work by James Wyatt, Inigo Jones and the Adams brothers. Set in 50 acres of grounds, laid out by the famous landscape artist Humphry Repton.

Notes: Elizabeth Brooke, Lady Northampton came to court in the last years of Henry VIII and captivated the much older William Parr. Northampton already had a wife but he married Elizabeth in 1547 and lived with her until they were ordered to separate. Their marriage was declared valid in 1548, invalid in 1553, and valid again in 1558--each change of monarch, and religion, changed Elizabeth's status. She was involved in the match to marry Jane Grey to Guildford Dudley. At the court of Queen Elizabeth, Lady Northampton was considered one of the Queen's closest friends, but as early as 1564 she was known to be suffering from breast cancer.
