Many web sites show this John as a son of Edward Longshanks (King Edward I of England), some as an illegitimate son, others as a legitimate son by Edward's second wife, Margaret of France. Neither TCP nor BE1883 make any mention of any such connection, TCP simply saying his "parentage is unknown". GenEU (Anjou) reports that King Edward had an illegitimate son called John Walter FitzRoy de Botetourte whose similar identification, if he indeed existed, may have led to this confusion. As TCP and, in particular, BE1883 may have been expected to report the possibility of a descent from King Edward had such been considered possible, we suspect that this connection is a relatively new 'discovery' and merely report the fact that (for reasons of which we are not aware) there are some who think there was such a connection. But his successful career does speak for high birth.

Some corrections and additions to the Complete Peerage: Volume 2: Botetourt (PROPOSED CORRECTIONS)
Index

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOTETOURT
Volume 2, page 233 (as modified by volume 14):
JOHN DE BOTETOURT [d. 1324] bastard s. of Edward I [Hailes Chron., in BM Cott. MS. Cleopatra, D III, f. 51, ex. inform. A.R. Wagner], was a distinguished soldier ...

Originally, volume 4 said that John's parentage was unknown. Stewart Baldwin, in March 1998, and later others, referred to the work of F.N. Craig, The American Genealogist, vol. 63, pp. 145-153 (1988), arguing that a pedigree in the Hailes Abbey Chronicle is incorrect in making him a son of Edward I, and that he was probably the son of Guy de Botetourt (living 1274, 1316), by his wife Ada. Douglas Richardson, in October 2002, produced some supporting evidence.

Volume 2, page 235 (as modified by volume 14):
He [John (de Botetourt), Lord Botetourt (d. 1385)] m., 1stly, Maud, da. of John DE GREY [1st LORD GREY OF ROTHERFIELD]. He m., 2ndly, before 31 May 1347, Joyce, da. of William ZOUCHE, formerly MORTIMER [LORD ZOUCHE of Mortimer]. ... He left issue by both wives.

JOYCE, apparently, according to modern doctrine, suo jure BARONESS BOTETOURT ... ... granddaughter and h., being da. and h. of John DE BOTETOURT, by Maud da. of John (DE GREY), 2nd LORD GREY OF ROTHERFIELD, which John de B. was s. and h. ap. (by his 2nd wife) of the late Lord, and d. v.p. 21 Sep. 1369.

Apparently the elder John de Botetourt did not have a first wife Maud de Grey, while the younger John de Botetourt married, soon after 28 November 1358, Maud, daughter of John, 1st (not 2nd) Lord Grey of Rotherfield, by his 2nd wife Avice Marmion. Maud remarried, before 13 June 1374, to Sir Thomas de Harcourt, of Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire (see Erdington, vol. 5, pp. 88, 89).

The elder John's first wife Maud, and the statement that he had issue both by her and by Joyce Zouche, appear to have been copied from a pedigree in Blore's History of Rutland [p. 90]. This was later corrected by the author [p. 209], and this Maud seems to have arisen purely out of confusion with the wife of the younger John de Botetourt.

A settlement was made, 28 November 1358, on the younger John de Botetourt and Maud, the daughter of John de Grey of Retherfeld (or Rotherfeld) [Calendar of Patent Rolls, 1358-1361, pp. 125, 127]. As Maud's father is described simply as John de Grey, not John de Grey the younger, it seems more natural to identify him as the first Lord Grey of Rotherfield, who did not die until 1359. This indication is confirmed by the heraldry on the tombs of Maud and her grandson Sir Robert Harcourt, at Stanton Harcourt. These were described in 1808 as displaying the arms of Marmion [George Simon, Earl Harcourt, An Account of the Church and Remains of the Manor House of Stanton Harcourt in the County of Oxford, pp. 8, 9, 13 (1808)]. Avice Marmion was the 2nd wife of John de Grey, the first Lord Grey of Rotherfield, but was not the mother of his son John, the second Lord.

[This problem was discussed in October 2003 and later by Rosie Bevan, John Stuart, Doug Smith, Douglas Richardson, Jim Weber and Paul Reed.

The title Baron Botetourt was created in the Peerage of England by writ of summons on 19 June 1305. It became abeyant in 1406, was recalled from abeyance in 1764 for Norborne Berkeley. However, it became abeyant again on his death in 1770. It was recalled a second time in 1803 for the 5th Duke of Beaufort, and became a subsidiary title of the Dukes of Beaufort until the death of the 10th Duke in 1984, when it became, and remains, abeyant.

Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt (1718 – October 15, 1770) was governor of the Virginia Colony from 1768 to 1770. He was a member of Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Before coming to Virginia he was (as Norborne Berkeley) Member of Parliament for Gloucestershire 1741 – 1763. He then obtained his peerage, when it was called out of abeyance in 1764, the third holder of the title having died in 1406. Lord Botetourt resided in the Governor's Palace on Duke of Gloucester Street, now a major attraction of Colonial Williamsburg in the Historic Triangle. Although a popular governor, Lord Botetourt served only two years. He died suddenly while still in office in 1770 and was buried in the Wren Building Chapel at William and Mary. Botetourt County, Virginia was named in his honour. A lifelong bachelor, he endowed an award at the College of William and Mary that is still known as the Botetourt Medal; it is the College's most prestigious award. The Medal has been awarded to an exceptional student every year since the late eighteenth century.
